The Congo
Heard a blip in the news about The Congo. Never ocurred to me, why it's refered as THE Congo? Here's my train of thought. It's formal name now is Democratic Repubic of the Congo. (Yes, I googled it). It is'nt The United States of THE America. (Ya, stupid topic huh?). In history, The Congo went by other names, (per google), but my attention span is as long as my.....well, it's short, and am too lazy to read it all. So, question is, why is it The Congo, and why is'nt it, The America? Or The England, etc? I'm a curious person regarding a lot of useless crap like this. Can someone give me a Reader's Digest version answer? I know there's a lady on here in Florida, who is well read, plz educate me. I know it's a dumb topic, trivial, oh well, but what the hell.

Re: The Congo
Perve, I'm not 100% certain but from what I can ascertain it is more of how it is being used in a sentence. I mean you go to a map and it says, Congo River, not THE Congo River.
The Congo gets its name from the ancient Kingdom of Kongo which inhabited the lands at the mouth of the river. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo, both countries lying along the river's banks, are named after it. Between 1971 and 1997 the government of then-Zaire called it the Zaire River.
Other famous rivers, The Amazon River, The Euphrates, The Ganges, The Hudson River, The Potomac River, The Rhine, The Rio Grande, The Nile.
And, this little girl continues to be late doing her homework.

Re: The Congo
How could you have known I was refering to? Plz note, for example, you did say "The Nile". There it is. Can I nit-pick enough. I was just saying. Thx kissu, knew I could count on you. Now I'm a grammer midget, but oddly enough, I recan cognize mis-spelled words (even if I don't know how to spell it) and can recognize correct sentece structure, and kissu has that under control. Thx

Re: The Congo
I thought it was a dance where you all stood in line holding the waist of the person in front and shook your legs as you snaked forwards...

Re: The Congo
I know I should be the last person to talk when it comes to the English language being that I mutilate it on a regular basis however.... There are times when people refer to "The Americas" I do believe that "The" in front of Congo is just as Kiss has stated just a language structure kind of thing.
Many times its about the how it rolls of the tongue as well. Haven't you ever said something and thought to yourself "That just doesn't sound right" That can be with certain words as well. I have a name to use as an example. Caleb is harder to say than Larry. Why? It has been explained to me that the mind just has a way of putting somethings together more easily than others. Caleb is more difficult and your almost has to think harder to say it than the name Larry.I'm sure you have thought "That just rolls off your tongue well."when you say certain things.

Re: The Congo
I always thought, "Congo" was the new, hip, cleaner name they gave to, "Ding Dongs"?... Woah, imagine my surprise!...
