I think it's a great idea and someone should run with it.
Pet owners....right now I just have cats, but I had the same problem when we had our old dog before he passed on.
Pets, especially spoiled house pets, can get so frickin' finicky. I can't read their minds, they can't speak, so I never know when I go to crack open their canned food if they are gonna love it, or walk away with upturned noses.
They can seem to love one variety but may not touch it the next time. There is no way of predicting which can to open.
Anyway, I'm sure I've mentioned it when I was caring for the aging dog when he got so picky, I wished to hell canned pet food had scratch and sniff kind of labels, I could just set out a variety of cans and see which one the house brats seemed most interested in.
I'd pay extra for that.

I also want a canned or packaged chicken soup on the shelf, not the good for lunch meal choice soup, I want the old gramma recipe to cure a cold or flu remedy chicken soup. There's a huge difference.
The soup mommas and grammas made for a sick family member has medicinal herbs, all the extra garlic and onion that eases congestion. I want a canned version of the home remedy. Put it in the soup isle and the cold and flu meds isle.
I'd buy that.

OMG, I could just see my cats with the scratch-n-sniff cans. We sometimes will put down a few cans and let them wonder around them and choose what they want, unopened of course. Majority wins.

my lab when we had him didn't care he'd garbage down what ever so fast he dint taste it...the cats are the same all three, they like their dry food , but can stuff the black cat is just a pig, and he teaches the gray kitten all kinds of good stuff, but then the babe , she likes to eat alone so she will walk off till the rest is done, ya have to set a dish aside for her and she don't like cane stuff too , just walk away ... but now if you are eating they all want a taste , hard salami or roast beast they like that too and doetoes or tator chips freetoes lol

Re: I think it's a great idea and someone should run with it.
My mom has two cats. One is a stray who came to be with us, after the previous owner dropped him off on our street and took off. From what I can gather, the cat is very lovable, but for some reason its been abused. It won't look you in the eye and it cowers when when I try to sneak a pat, like it thinks I'm going to slap it or something. I call it DC (Dam Cat),but my mom calls it, "Pepperoni" a name given to it by my nieces on a visit. The other one is, "Princess". She is very old now and I don't think she's going make it much longer. We figured out the other day that she's turning fifteen soon.
Before Pepperoni, I had given her my cat to watch when the new landlord discovered I had one that I wasn't suppose to have. Max's whole name was, "Maximum Trouble" since he was always getting into it. He was a fruit loop, short haired and dark grey. I had a fish tank, but Max scared all the fish to death or killed them by scooping them out one by one out of the tank. I always knew he was doing that, because the floor was always wet and he looked like he got trapped in the shower. He loved his work and did it often. He and Princess hit it off. They were like an old married couple . He would groom her on the backrest of the couch until she either got his tongue in her eye or got bored with his handy work. Then she would backhand him off the backrest ans send him tumbling to the floor. He was so dumb, he took her abuse and came back for more and more.
