It occured to me-----------
While watching tv, I noticed that many competing companies do this. Especially cell phone companies.

We want them to compete as much as possible. It keeps our prices down. If they get along they price fix and we get screwed. NOT in a nice way.

I agree. But just for the fun of it, plz allow me to play advocate. Advertisement: Here is our product, you can do better with a competators product. Our's is over-priced, and will turn to shit sooner than later, etc, etc, yadda, yadda, yadda. Just messin with everybody! As I expressed in another string, the new and improved product. What are they saying? The old one was'nt any great shakes? Did'nt get it right the last time? Maybe this product can still use improvement(s)? Did we all get screwed by using inferior products? Hey, think I'll just wait, till they perfect it, and then, we can have the "Best ever". It is fun to listen to advertisements, and read between the lines. Just another thing that amuses me.

Thing is that all companies, no matter what the business or product is, are all in the same bed. Verizon and ATT for example. Oil companies, US based auto makers, you get it.--right?

Oh, I do get it, I think you're absolutely right, OOMG....They use marketing and advertisment to lead consumers to believe they are in competition, when actually they all do work together to some degree.
What time period was it for the Burger Wars? That's a pretty good case study for this type of thing. As far as the ads went, you would think that every fast food chain was mudslinging and competing with each other, actually, collectively...they were increasing interest and demand, profits and traffic for all. "They" know, we will pick a side. It's playing on our human nature, we either want to be on a winning team, or root for the underdog. When the competition highlights a price war, they know we love to take advantage and snag a great bargin, it arouses our brain chemicals.
Even if...we really don't even want a burger in the first place.

Re: It occured to me-----------
Considering I was an TV Advertising account executive for many years I can tell you you are PART right.
There is so much psychology that is put into advertising. Much of the information that we used is coming directly from the consumer. Every time you use your credit card or your store discount card or loyalty program it is tracked and we can tell for instance that by putting a product on a higher shelf we got more people to purchase that product. Or changing a color or whatever we might be testing at the time.Their are so many ways your tracked it would scare the average person.
The competition you see is very real. However that doesn't mean they don't work together to get market trends going. For example they will keep the secret phone they are getting as best they can and only leak out what they think will generate buz. That in turn puts the competition to say we have a phone that does that as well and our tech people say that the new technology is going in this direction so we are working on that. So they release stuff that info which creates buzz on their stuff.
Years before you see the products there are conventions and conferences that we would go to showing what the technology and expected trends will be IF they get it through the courts and the technology pans out in mass market, if there is going to be demand, etc...
Some of you might remember a commercial a few years back: "Imagin being able to sit on the beach and do your work with no wires. Imagine being able to pay your bills from your phone. Imagine being able to see your kids from across the world. Don't imagine it's here...." They went on to say it's going to be coming to you soon.
When they put time restraints on a purchase or something that you need to act on quickly to get a deal that is referred to as "a call to action." It's a very successful advertising trick.

Technolngy. I have it on good authority (a federal agent, Homeland Seucurity, who is close to me), any "upgrades", in electronics, are in reallity, are here NOW, and are about 100 years in the future, and is used by the feds now. It is released a little at a time, to the consumers. Why? Simple: Money. Don't care who believes it, does'nt change "what is, is".

I'm sure your point is true in general, but 100 years? not a chance. Look at the last 100 years - no one back then could have predicted the world we have now. Also, things have changed radically now. 50 years ago all the advanced research was being done by governments but not any more - haven't you seen Iron Man?

The whole marketing thing, still just breaks down to the basics. It's like a game, they may all be players in the same game and the game has rules (laws)
And just like animals, the males (males = marketing/agencies, product manufacturers) that flaunt the most flash, and build the best nest get the female(female = the consumer)

Thx 5star. That time frame would make sense, I'm not all that, but there is a chance, just maybe, know a bit more than I probably should, just from casual conversation. I really don't know details, but I'm given to undestand, technolegy we know, is childs play compared to actuallity. What government in the world tells us all? Check me, no politics. Thx
