Local Festivals
What's going on in your state or area?
They've been pushing the "Horseradish Festival" all week up in the city, not going, sooooo not going.
Once in awhile, they've done a Lumberjack Festival near by, that one is kinda fun.

I love Thresher's Shows, Old Iron!!!
Steam engines and antique tractors, haven't been to one in ages though, they usually schedule them during the hottest part of summer and hubs has absolutely no interest in such things.

Re: Local Festivals
Giant Days is in August. originally called "Corn on the Curb". it's the celebration of the Jolly Green Giant. the vegetable company started in my hometown. even though the company no longer exists here since Pillsbury took over, the celebration lives on.
just a little trivia here, did you know that the Jolly Green Giant was modeled after Paul Bunyan? Green Giant's peas were "the biggest in the land"

We've had the Strawberry Festival, Watermelon Festival, Suwannee Fest, Swamp Cabbage Fest, 48th Annual Shrimp Fest, and 25th Dancin' in the Streets.
Oh, and a couple of little car races. Daytona, and 12 Hours of Sebring.

The last time I had swamp cabbage was Thanksgiving. The time before that, I watched my boyfriend and another guy spend about an hour chopping up the palm. Then he had to take it home, peel it, cut it up, and cook. You can eat it raw also.

FYI... Oxford is the Turkey capital of Nebr

Re: Local Festivals
I do dearly love those old steam engines, before the Thresher's Show, some bring 'em in early and park 'em in the area, I like to take the walk and go check them out.
They are amazing things.

Re: Local Festivals
Living at the Jersey Shore there is so much going on here this time of year I could not not list them all. Each little town has their own events and each club can have events.
We have Funspringer events where they showcase mostly local bands and sometimes celebrities from I think MTV or some radio station will be there. There was the Seaside music festival. The Irish festival, "Kick off Summer" at the shore events all over. Those were just the past week or so. Only a small portion of what goes on.
Each town also has summer concert series that they hold on the beaches or parks ever other week. Each town does it a different night so you can go to a different one each night, by the time you finish the rotation its time for your towns concert again. Those are really nice and free so if you don't want to spend a fortune you can bring a picnic and a blanket and just sit and enjoy the show. You can by food if you want to as well.Other than the traffic and unbelievable crowds at times it can be nice. Especially the events that are more for the locals and aren't all about getting trashed and stupid. Most of them are during the week.

Re: Local Festivals
Hey wantubad2, I have gone to the balloon festival several times when they are here in New Jersey. Its beautiful at night when the do the night glow. It has been getting a bit expensive and the shows are not as good so might not go this year. My bother has gone every year for about 15 years I think. The kids always enjoyed it as well.

Re: Local Festivals
In the city where I was born they do a fiesta. It's the, "Saint Peter's Day Fiesta". There it's a three day festival with a blessing of the fleet, an outdoor mass, where they bless the boats and a plentiful catch for the year to come. The fiesta has rides and games and a Horribles Day Parade (don't ask) They have one particularly interesting event, "The Greasy Pole" Men (Boys) walk across a pole that's covered in axle grease, about six inches worth, all to grab a flag at the other end. The pole itself is set in fifteen feet of water, about twenty feet above it, when the tide is right. Occasionally you will see one who nails his balls so hard, the guys watching from a distance will wince in sympathy. If you want to check out a taste of the race, some have posted last years on the tube. Google, "Gloucester (MA) Greasy Pole" and see what I'm talking about. P.S. My old house used to be fifty-feet from the pole itself. Until I was seven, I had the best seat in the house...
