We goc high winds yeserday, storms are predicted today too.
Joplin is one the west border of the state, I live in the more central area, Joplin got hit hard, last I heard 116 dead.

Morning Chazzy - Glade to see your pretty face - Weather sure is crazy this spring. Peace!

You know I love seeing you! We had sirens yesterday, no sound more unsettling....watch the radar all day, had some serious winds but all in our area are safe. Joplin has 128 dead, about 900 injured....the one statistic we are watching is the 1500 missing. An entire factory shift is missing.

Re: Wicked Weather
I think I might have told this before if so I apologise.
I had a friend on another web site like this. We got real close after a couple of years. He and his wife were both military. He retired first and stayed with the kids while she was shipped out. He and his wife were both air traffic controllers. They had that huge mile wide tornado hit their town. I believe the worst until the one the other day that hit. Anyway He was at work when it formed and started travelling. He watched it on the radar as it went down his own street and knowing that his children were there at a neighbour babysitter while he was at work. He said he never felt so helpless or so frightened. His wife was due to retire from the military within a few months. They decided not to even wait . He sold the house and packed up his family and moved. He and his wife said they could never go through that again. As big and crazy as that was the damage was minimal compared to what the one the other day did. By the way his house and children were spared any major damage or injuries. He said half the neighbourhood was never touched and the rest looked like a war zone.

Re: Wicked Weather
It is a horrible feeling watching the rotation on radar heading towards your loved ones. We've got plenty of tornado stories for sure.

The missing persons number has dropped from 1500 to about 230.

Doesn't matter where you live, Mother Nature can give you a bitch slap at any time in many ways.

What ever she needs PLEASE someone give it to her! All I know is she seems pretty pissed off and hasn't let up for a while.Maybe she just wants to prove who really is in charge. OK We get the message!

A little advice most females hate when guys assume its PMS. So you might want to hold off on those comments. She is pissed off enough already.Don't think we want to push her . I wonder if she likes chocolate?

Re: Wicked Weather
235 still missing, it's believed that some of the missing are on the fatality list. 5 days in, and still so many missing.

Not only a historical tornado by size and damage, but never before that I can recall, have looters been a problem, gawkers yes...but looters, never before.

I cannot imagine how black a heart must be, to loot after a tragic even like this.

Yeah, weather radar has come such a long way, but at times, it's still more accurate to just step outside and look.

Allot of farmers I know can read a sky better than a fully schooled meteorologist.

Not to worry, i have a nice big full basement finished, my neighbors came to visit while the tornado sirens were blowing,, a couple of the kids were frightened so i got their mind off the tornado by making them listen to me play guitar...lol I'm sure your basement will be great in time Chazzy

Re: Wicked Weather
Nah, it won't. It's just a small space, all concrete with the washer and dryer, tool bench....gotta build the laundry room upstairs, move the washer and dryer, clear out the whole basement, one coat of Dryloc will dry it up great, then add a few storage shelves, new work bench and it will be dry, bright and storm safe, but that's about it.

I'd rather sit out a storm in your basement for sure.

Re: Wicked Weather
Or you can all move to a safer place! I guess ever-place seems to have their own issues. If its not tornado's it's fires or floods or whatever mother nature or man kind feels like throwing at us.I bet it scares the hell out of people when those sirens go off, especially after a real bad storm like the ones that have been going on lately.

I know the sirens from the Nuclear power plant gets our attention. Fortunately its always been a test as long as I've lived here.

One good thing.I heard the companies that build the storm cellars are doing real well even in this economy. They said they start at $1,500. I thought it would be much higher.True story it was on the news last night.

I love Missouri, I'm not living on a fault line, edge of a cliff, on a flood plain, or at the foot of a active volcano, I'm not moving for sure!

Mudlides, wild fires, hell....a sinkhole can open up right under your feet.

I love Missouri.

Nrg, when I start construction, I'll be hittin' ya up for advice.

Re: Wicked Weather
They always do a few "feature stories" during storm season here. Some companies tried to market their safe rooms, meant mostly for home invasion crime use, but when we had the outbreak of tornados (since New Year's eve) they have modified the product and are marketing them as storm shelters.

Back in the hills at my ancestor's original homestead, where some of my family still live and they use the same earthen root cellar my great grandparents used. Best way to go, no problem of being in a safe room or basement buried under rubble.

The missing persons count for Joplin is now under 30.

The true part was that they were on the news and said that. lol

I know the news is crap. Did you forget what line of work most of my family is in?I wouldn't trust the news if they stood in front of a burning building and said it was on fire.lol

Re: Wicked Weather
Those who advertise their emegency shelter's, and change it to storm shelter's, are capitalizing on the situation. They are in business to make money. Whether I agree or not, is not at issue here. My question is, if your shelter, for whatever it's use, if underground, what about it being in a flood-plane, would'nt people get wet. I'm just asking, I really don't know. Maybe, if it's underground, in high country, as in the side of hill's/mountain's, now that make's sense to me. Response's?

Re: Wicked Weather
I live by the ocean and never worry about it. I figure if things get real bad around here the Nuclear power plant will go and if that goes it doesn't really matter what kind of shelter we have.Even if the shelter helps us survive, we wouldn't be able to come out. I would rather die.

Re: Wicked Weather
I wonder if we'll ever reach the point of controlling the weather, or at least reducing the amount of damage from tornados and hurricanes.

Read a wonderful article proposing that lots of long plastic tubes with rubber rings at the top are placed in the Caribbean. These would have the effect of pushing hot water from the surface deeper down and therefore cooling the surface of the water and removing the energy that fuels the hurricanes. Bit messy environmentally but cheap and practical, certainly when compared to the costs of cleanup.

And if we can catch that bloody butterfly that keeps flapping its wings and causing storms we'd be well on the way...

Re: Wicked Weather
Yes, very rare to see tornados in that area.

For Perve's previous post. Yep earthen root cellers are the best storm shelters. Root cellers were built to provide long term storage for onions, potatoes and such. To build one, you had to keep in mind the perma frost line while digging the depth, then shored up safely, then dirt is mounded over it till the celler looks like a small hill.

You mostly see root cellers under the house, with the ramp like, angled doors, but the earthen ones are found on the older homesteads.

Joplin's missing persons in now down to zero, all are accounted for now.

I live on the outmost ring of the New Madrid radius zone. You could feel it rumble a bit under your feet, and a few of our old original windows rattled a bit.

We get everything up here...That's why we New Englanders use the phrase; "If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute, it gets worse!"...

Heard something dumb about the tornado area yesterday (Springfield), the National Guard is still on maneuvers protecting residents property from the looters. I heard one of the neighboring towns, that wasn't even touched, got hit by vandals. One older woman , had an Intendo WII stolen, when the thieves smashed out her windows and took it. She was at her daughters riding out the storm if it came her way. That's just low...
