Houdini....magic then and now.
Today (Googledoodle says) is Houdini's birthday. He was an ambitious ground breaker with a remarkable life, and unfortunately...a kinda freaky premature death.
Today, the new breed of Magicians really go big. I don't track them much really, never a big fan of Copperfield, but have seen some Criss Angel stuff....compared to Houdini, the magicians today seem to be very over the top in drama, making elephants and huge monuments "disappear".
Anyone have a favorite magician? Seen a live show? Fascinated by the "how did they do that?"
Impressive and entertaining for a live show, but I would imagine anyone seeing it on internet video clips or TV, brings on the skepticism making it a little more difficult to just enjoy the acts.

Re: Houdini....magic then and now.
I actually as a kid wanted to be one, I pretty much did card tricks..Sleight of hand. I read the Houdini story years ago, and he was and still is the master, though his techniques as in swallowing items to pick locks and such were over the top..I bet that's where the "Hannibal Lectar".....escape scene was derived from, when he swallows a paper clip or pin..something. I can't do the sleight of hand like I did as a kid but having people up close and not see you moving cards, forcing cards, all that entails made it fun....There's been a few since then but none that could do what Houdini did, he not only did magic and escapes, he was excellent at throwing cards, which I used to do too. If you snap them hard and level they cut through the air like lightning. I'd take a box and stretch paper over it, make a target and stick cards in the paper...or throw them, sometimes the length of say the gym at school. Houdini would sometimes name a single seat in a theater, like Carnegie Hall and land a card right where he said he was going to...incredible. Yes, for all he was known for, his death, was tragic yet when you think of it not a surprise...eventually it caught up with him...

Hey! Back in the day, I used to drive down the street, and turn into a liquor store. Doe's that count as an unknown great magician? Now day's, I create the allusion, of being a human being. Now that's just cleaver right there, and I don't care who you are.(quoting someone?)

Re: Houdini....magic then and now.
I could look it up, but I think his death was related to being able to take a punch in the gut, and a bad appendix...
I could look that up later, or if someone knows offhand they could clarify the details...
