Things from our childhood
While reading about Cheetos on the thread about Freensleezy, it got me thinking about things we used to have as kids and aren't around anymore or at least haven't had since I was a kid.
Are there things that you had as a kid but haven't had since?
Bonomo Turkish Taffy: this was gone for years and recently was started to be made again although I haven't had it since they started making it again.
There was something I think they called "Horns"? they were shaped like little cones or a horn. They were in bags and you ate them like corn chips, or bite site pretzels. I don't think they make them anymore. I do think they were corn chip like.
Brown Edge Cookies: These were very thing sugar cookies brown just around the edges (That's how they got the name)

Re: Things from our childhood
One item pops up in my head:
Do they still make those candy bars called, "zero"?
I remember they were covered in white chocolate and was kinda like a snickers bar.

You may mean "Bugles", and I believe they are still around. I think I've only eaten them twice in my life. I do know they are consider the worst for you of any bagged snack.

Yes Kiss Bugles! Thank you. That was driving me crazy.
I didn't know about the worst for you thing but I know there are a few things like that that make me laugh.
I know two things on the top ten list of foods you should never put in your body.Oreo cookies, Nutrasweet are on the list. I can easily live without Nurtasweet but you have have Oreos once in a while.
It's not like we eat this stuff expecting it to be healthy. They past a law in NY that they wanted all restaurants and bakeries to not use saturated fats.Because its not healthy to consume saturated fats. The bakeries went nuts! Their argument was it taste better with saturated fats. It's not like people come into a bakery for healthy food.I have agree.

It's hard to believe as kids we thought candy cigarettes were so cool with the red tip and all. Even came in a box like cigarettes.

Re: Things from our childhood
I think they still make candy cigarettes. They also made gum in cigarettes they were gum in cigarette rappers also in a box to look like the real thing and when you "puffed" on them, the powder (The stuff they used to keep it from sticking to the paper.I think corn starch.)would be like smoke.
OK how many people remember Wax Lips, how about Violets and Bottle Caps?
There are some candy stores that specialize in "Nostalgia" candy. Dylan's has a whole section of "Nostalgia" candy as well as few other places and some on line stores as well.

I've seen them but never had them. I love bananas and chocolate. I always said I wanted to try them but never seemed to for some reason. Now I am going to have to find a place that makes them or make it myself. Is the chocolate the kind that forms a hard shell or syrup?

Chocolate stars???Why is it when you post I feel like we came from different planets. I never heard of so many things you mention.lol
Thanks Kiss.It doesn't seem hard to make at all. I was wondering if it was that Chocolate shell stuff. The bad thing about knowing whats in it instead of buying it is I can't eat it with the excuse of I didn't know it was that bad for me.lol
There was something really big in Brooklyn at the bakeries mostly in Jewish neighborhoods. They were so good. They were a sponge cake with whipped cream topped with a maraschino cherry. It came in a container that was pushed up from the bottom. When the top layer of whipped cream was gone you got to the cake. I think they were called Charlotte Russe.YUM....

Frosty Root Beer, it's been gone from here for a looong time.
There used to be a small bite size candy called "squirrels", that were some kind of nut / carmel, yet hard candy...Vita-Boy potato chips. I worked for a guy that delivered them, my first job, about 11 yrs. old or so.
Bugles are still around I believe...I played one in the scouts, oh wait, that's different, lol..Orange Crush pop...we used to sneak down to the pop machine, when they had bottles, and a couple of us would tip the machine as we popped a bottle open, filling a glass. Oh the life of crime...

Let me tell you about Orange Crush. My grandparents were in their early 60's when I was born. They were two very Christian, people. On the farm, there were no cards, dice, or bottled soda allowed, EXCEPT, Orange Crush. And, I never understood why Tarzan was okay, but Carol Burnett was banned?

LOL. that's a good question...Crush brand pop was around here for years and it isn't uncommon to drive by an old store, gas station with a Orange Crush sign above the door....some still open and the sign is nostalgic.
My parents bought a party store when we moved north when I was abut six, and one thing I've never seen since long ago is Frosty Rootbeer, it was the best...but we had a orange crush sign above the stores door, though there was also grape crush too...not as good but still....egadumundo that was long ago.
As far as Tarzan perhaps it was Johny Weissmuller was the man, a swimmer.. undefeated winner of five Olympic gold medals, 67 world and 52 national titles, holder of every freestyle record from 100 yards to the half-mile...that's enough to overlook the lack of clothing..a guess?

Strawberry Crush was the best. you can still find all three flavors. Wal-Mart and Hy-Vee stores sell them in 6 pack glass bottles, for about $4.99. but they just aren't the same as i can remember them as a kid.

Its so funny the things that were so small but really left an impression on us.
Funny side note about Johny Weissmuller. He became a swimming instructor in his later years. He taut my uncle...well I should say he tried to teach my uncle to swim. I think he was his only failure. My uncle had a horrible fear of water. But who would have ever expected Johny Weissmuller to be a swim instructor. I think it was Brooklyn or Manhattan and either at a YMCA or Hotel if I remember correctly. I would have to ask my mom. When I first heard the story I was confused because I only knew he was Tarzan,I had no idea he was a big time swimmer.

I still have mine. It is a little bent in one area. I can't remember what its life span was with me playing with it, but it worked well and will last forever!
I also have this little tiny toy, not sure to describe it. It is .. now I remember, I still have it. It is Atom Ant, and his arms are hooked to two strings. You push the buttons on each side of the box, and he does back flips, and front flips. Like on the bars in gymnastics. My gf son saw it and began playing with it. He wanted to take it home. Amazing..it didn't have buttons, a screen, and nothing blew up!

Re: Things from our childhood
I recall those gymnastic toys...I did that gymnastic stuff for a while in high school, and not very well, lol. It was more about no gym uniform and the gurls in their gymnastic outfits, and suddenly "you want us to what?".."Iron cross?".."Climb the rope, no legs used in an L position?"...har har... I wanted to mention the old Duncan yo-yo...the Butterfly was my favorite, I had a few imperials too.. I used to know a few tricks but they don't make them like they used to..When in junior high it was funny the different things that went around, one was everyone had a yo-yo, then there were the deadly "Two Balls on a string, Clackers?"...oh yeah a brilliant idea..Also a bunch of us learned to juggle, is that ODD or what? I must say though when my son was tiny, juggling was a powerful weapon when he was cranky..."no, I didn't use him, don't go there"...I used tennis balls....anything I could quickly grab. Other similar things came and went, magic tricks...more that escape me right now.

I had the string with the two hard balls on the end of it. I wish I still had it. We also had a wonderful game called Pick Up Sticks. A bunch of 12' thin sticks, with sharp points on each end. You let them fall to the floor, then flip them around with your colored stick. A sure fire way to poke an eye out!
The one that just came to my mine is the The View-Master. It was a popular toy for decades.

Re: Things from our childhood
They still make view master I just gave the one I had from my kids to my nephews. They also have a telescope version I have to give it to them when I see them again.
I still have the click clacks there were the acrylic and the wooden. I have the acrylic. They were changed to wood because they would shatter. They also at least left a nasty bruise on your arm and many times break your arm or anything else it hit so they were taken of the market.
I think you can still get the metal slinky to but hard to find.I still have one as well. I love that thing. The plastic ones suck.Although some do come in different shaped and colors but you can't get them to "walk".
Dunken yo-yo's used to have contests. I wasn't very good just a few tricks. My brother was really good he had several different kinds and he entered several contests.
Pick up sticks was a great game. I thought they still made them.
Do you remember the thing with the bald guy and metal shavings . You used the magnetic pen to put hair, a beard, etc. on him. I always wanted the full body version but they don't make that.
