Bluegrass
You know, I'm rightly proud of my Ozark Hillbilly heritage.
I come from a healthy stock of blackberry picking, quilt making, gospel singing, bluegrass playing people.
(Yes, I wear shoes, I am educated, and my hubs is not related to me, and no member of my family has or ever has run a still, although...properly made moonshine is quite nice)
Part of my heritage is the gospel/bluegrass. I love alternative contemporary, classical and symphony, etc....but I embrace and truly love bluegrass...Doc Watson, the Stanley Brothers, The Scruggs, all of it...
I love that modern bluegrass bands often are taking classic metal rock and playing bluegrass style.
Anyone else listen to, or play bluegrass?

Re: Bluegrass
I was playing at an open mic night a couple of years ago and while I was playing, a couple of guys jumped up and started playing and backing me up. Not normal protocol at one of those things, but I had just finished playing I'm A Believer and went into Wild Nights and they were just liking the songs. It was a bass player, a guy with a Strat (I was playing acoustic) and a fiddle player. Well, after a couple more songs with those boys, the fiddle player pulled the bow across his strings and the four of us broke into a 15 minute Blue Grass jam session. We didnt play any specific song, we just kept following eachother, trading off licks. It was a total friggin blast! I had never played bluegrass before but that was so damn much fun! Oh yeah, and the crowd went wild too. All 11 of them!

Re: Bluegrass
Ah, wish I could have seen that, I find bluegrass jams very soul lifting.
I adore Bill Monroe, The Dillards too.
That banjo/fiddle combo with a walking bass. Oh yeah.

Re: Bluegrass
Bluegrass is a nice change of pace occasionally
Edgar Meyer and Joshua Bell teamed up to do a Short Trip Home a few years back and the was a great album. Also I saw a band open for the Subdudes a few years ago. The played a combination of bluegrass, rock and lousiana swamp music that blew me away. And I'll be damned if I can remember the name of the band.

But "Alabama" is smoking hot, and Brittney Spears, back-up singers, are the best, bar none. I'm the perve, and I approve this message. And for the Chazz lady

Re: Bluegrass
I love all kinds of music but there's nothing like some good ole bluegrass! I live right here in Music City USA (yes, I need to update my profile.. this country girl done moved to the big city of Nashville!) I love going to the Grand Ole Opry where it's not uncommon to hear some bluegrass. Sometimes they have bluegrass nights at the Ryman and I go to that when I can.
I too am proud of my heritage.. I remember when I was growing up going to my grandmothers house and everyone just sitting around singing and playing different instruments. It was always a good time. Those are some of my best memories

Re: Bluegrass
I lived in Florida for a little while. I worked in a country bar. They had a band that used to play a mix of country , bluegrass, and classic rock. It was a little shock to my system when I first moved and worked there. I was definitely a rock girl back then. But it was really nice. I was surprised how much they all influence each other and hoe distinctly different they really are as well.
I still remember the bars name and slogan."Rusty O'riely's...and if that ain't county I'll kiss your ass!" The theme song was Rocky Top Tennessee

Re: Bluegrass
I love bluegrass music...as Steve Martin said "You can't play a sad song on the banjo"...I play 5 string, not very well at all, but try. There's a annual three day festival here called "Wheatland"...so awesome as you can go for the day or camp the weekend, there's usually three tents and then the main stage with music going round the clock, plus as you walk around since they don't need amplifiers there's even more music throughout the campsites. My beginnings, roots are country music thanks to my parents, though I've got an ear for almost everything...cept rap...ack!
I lost a dear guitar pickin friend from Wolf County Kentucky just a few years ago and he taught me songs from the holler, old gospel songs that he sang with his family as a kid. Classic, his entire family played something, and sang...that's what they did, they had no T.V.
I have played with outstanding musicians, but he loved to play for purely the love of music alone more than any I have ever known. It wasn't about good or bad, it was about love.
I saw "Newgrass Revival", at Wheatland, and that's when no one knew who they were. Bela Fleck was unknown and he's huge now! They were awesome, the first bluegrass band I'd seen with a electric bass player...it was Bluegrass with a touch of rock, jazz....entirely different than anything I'd heard...vocally dynamic. I had just enough beer in me that I was a cloggin fool by evening, lol...( Jed Clampett ) I love all types of music as I say and bluegrass is amongst the top. I got a dog from a D.J. friend that was the runt of the litter, from Bill Monroe's farm...so I named him Monroe...playing bluegrass is no easy task either until you get used to it, because the chords don't always change the same as far as beat...so anyone saying it's "hick"...or too "easy" hasn't played with the right people....

There is a wonderful bluegrass festival in Winfield Kansas, where many big stars got their start. I remember seeing the Dixie Chicks there when they were just little girls. People camp out all week there. Once i was playing my guitar at my lil camp along with a couple ppl i knew, John McCrutchin (hes amazing on the hammered dulcimer) was on stage. This guy walked up & asked if he could sit in & play with us , we gladly said yes. We played & laughed & had a good time. Pretty soon,John McCrutchin said "I think I see a friend out there,Tom, come up here & help me out " . The guy that had been playing with us got up & said thanks for the fun, but i'm being paged. He was Tom Chapin.... Harry Chapins brother, which i can attest, sounds exactly like Harry. We all just looked at each other... we just played guitar with Tom Chapin

Re: Bluegrass
I had a mandolin too and actually had better luck playing it, in fact wish I had a better one for recording. The 5-string, well since I finger pick guitar thought "Heck I can do that" as the left hand looks pretty un-busy...WRONG! The left is less busy but it's nothing like fingerpicking a guitar at all...I know a few, very few "patterns, or rolls" as they call picking styles and that's about it. I can make most stringed instruments play a little, as well as brass. I played trombone from 5th grade till 12th, our school had a 23 piece jazz band...SO fun. Again, another genre..the old big band era songs were tough as they'd change beat, or time signatures a lot. The older ones were the hardest..One stringed instrument I picked up, and put down, and picked up, and put down...was the fiddle. Again the left hand wasn't too bad but to get past the "killing a cat" sound the bow makes when one knows not what they do was more than I could take..I am so lucky as I got to play in a band with a pedal steel player that was awesome. He was Faron Young's steel player for years, Young a country music hall of famer. And songs that I'd played so much I'd almost yawn through suddenly came back to life when he joined, I mean I literally stopped playing, on stage...my mouth hanging open. He,,,looks back at me saying, "Hey Man, play something"..lol..I was ooops, oh yeah..

I adore the Chapins, NRG.
I like the Steve Martin Quote, Grand.
But, songs like Foggy Mountain Breakdown (Scruggs) can be played in Minor or Major....and one sounds happy, one sound kinda dark and spooky.

I mean he's heard it all I imagine, what do I say? "Garsh Vince, yer shure good"...

Will do! There's such a list of great artists, again of all types of music that people have turned me on to..and I thank them all. As far as Steve Martin, theres a GREAT video of him and Earl Scruggs, plus a host of huge stars playing "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"...youtube. There's a few different versions or videos but the list of people, great musicians is too long to list.
One great one is at -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icMTVV5Lwaw Just watched it, amazing!
