Am I Too Cynical?
I'm sure that OOMG will have a field day with that subject line!
Anyway, Im watching live coverage in Japan the other morning and Diane Sawyer walks over to a small group of people to interview them. One man got up and walked over and grabbed what appeared to be a loaf of bread and offered her some of it. As usual, she gushed over what a caring and generous thing had just happened. Which it was. That is, if it were real. I'm not saying it wasnt, but to me, it seemed staged because he only walked to her and no one else in her crew. It just appeared to be something she set up before the cameras started rolling to use as a clip to advertise for ABC news by tugging on peoples heart strings. Way too self-serving. I realize that the Japanese people as a whole are a very generous culture, but with the thousands of TV crews from all over the world covering this whole catastrophe, I kinda doubt that anyone would be sharing food with anyone who wasnt in dire need of it, such as a foreign news reporter. It just came across as kinda cheap and smarmy.

Re: Am I Too Cynical?
Have they ever made a blow up doll version of Barbie? Now that would be interesting.
And for the ladies, a blow up Ken!!

Re: Am I Too Cynical?
Hippyguy: There are thousands of walking Barbies out there the largest concentration are in LA they tend to hang around the plastic surgeons offices in case they break something and need a fix.I think they should be called doll doctors instead of plastic surgeons. Many of those women really do look more like Barbie than a real woman these days.As for Ken I was never a big fan definitely wouldn't be now. In case you never noticed he is missing a vital part of his anatomy that I would really miss.
Free:You to cynical?Nah....Yes many of those types of shots are set up but not necessarily by the reporter. The Directer/Producer/Camera guy could have told the guy to do it as they went on air. That's not to say that the guy might not have offered the crew as well as Ms. Sawyer the bread he might have, but, then someone would make the suggestion to do it again but on camera.Of course the crew has there own supplies and most likely gave the family a bit after the shot was over.
In this condition that was the most likely of circumstances however, in different circumstances that aren't so disastrous they do set up shots all the time as well. But people will offer the person on camera things or say things to the person on camera because they want to get on TV and they think that's the best way. Lets face it if they give the camera man a sandwich it doesn't show your face when you are giving it to him.
The guys all standing around making faces and doing stupid shit even in the worst and most inappropriate of times are referred to as "camera lice" by many people in the business. You have all seen them. Those are the people that are at a terrible crash site and the whole scenario is bad. The people dead, drugs and or alcohol are most likely involved etc.. yet the "camera lice" will be sitting there with a big smile saying "I knew them if you want to interview me" Then go on and say all kinds of trash about the victims while claiming to be their best friend and very upset yet have a big smile on their face. While the rest of the "camera lice" stand in the background waving , mouthing "hi mom", doing the horn behind peoples head thing. You know who they are everyone has seen them.
So no you really are not being cynical if you ask me. But then again I might not be the most objective on this subject.lol
