Bet if you watched some clips of old TV and movies you would will be shocked!
After thinking about Danny Kaye,Dick Van Dyke and Jerry Lewis because of another thread, I decided to look for some clips on that web site that posts all that stuff. I was really surprised to find so many.

I happen to love Danny Kaye as well as many of the other "old timers". I used to hear stories about him when I was a kid because he went to school with my Grandfather. Although Danny Kaye never graduated from high school. But I always loved his movies. My Grandfather said he was the same way in school as you see him on stage which is why he was always in trouble for being class clown. Hans Christian Anderson is my all time favorite movie of his, and one of my all time favorites in general.

My dad was also a big old movie fan so we always watched old movies together. We also watched many variety shows and comedy shows. Carol Burnett, The Smothers Brothers, Laugh Inn (Sock it to me!)They even got President Nixon to say it. lol Not to mention the fickle finger of fate award, from that show.I even remember a really strange show called "Love, American Style". I loved the Dean Martin Roasts. Remember Flip Wilson? lol

TV and Movies don't even come close with the talent they used in those shows and movies back then.Just go on the site and look at a few it will have you rolling with laughter. They also had amazing singers and dancers. Harry Belafonte did a thing on the Smothers Brothers and on The Danny Kaye show. He was am amazing singer and hot! I know most of these guys were really more my parents time but I loved watching them. No more Frank Sinatra's around anymore. Or Sammy Davis Jr. I loved when he sang the candy man. lol
Did anyone see the Original Oceans eleven? Or Robin and the Seven Hoods? Or White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye? How about all the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby movies or the Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. I love them all.

It was a nice break from the depressing news of the day to sit and watch a few of those clips. I might just go watch My Fair Lady or some other Great movie now.....Maybe even Marry Poppins so I can see that laughing seen.

Why do I think you are not referring to the Musician? I know you spell better than I do so you must really mean Yoyo man and not Yo-Yo Ma. OK I know but I wont ruin it.But I'll tell you on the phone if you don't believe I know. lol I really am a geek when it comes to this stuff. I has a lot of absolutely useless knowledge. lol

Re: Bet if you watched some clips of old TV and movies you would will be shocked!
Newbie, I agree, there is nothing better than the older movies and T.V. shows. Sunday night was Disney. We watched Gunsmoke, Lucy, Mission Impossible, and Wild Wild West.

The movies you mention are great. One day I was lucky to see a biography on Jerry and Dean... my absolute favorite. They met at a young age, and had such chemistry. I wish you could see have seen it. And, my dad spoke of Dean Martin, as they were both from Stubenville, Ohio. I really think it was best for Dean to get out of Ohio.

Finally, White Christmas. Originally Bing Crosby was to be paired with Fred Astaire, however, Fred was in retirement. There is no one funnier or more talented than Danny Kaye.

And, here is a little trivia for you. The "Sisters" comedy act that Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye perform was not originally in the script. They were clowning around on the set and the director thought it was so funny that it was written in.

Re: Bet if you watched some clips of old TV and movies you would will be shocked!
See that's what I mean. The fact that that little piece of fun made it into the movie and was so freaking funny shows how talented they were and that the directer appreciated it. Thank you for the trivia Kiss.

Back then these guys did everything. They sang , danced. acted and jumped threw hoops if it was for the movie. Now they are all such spoiled brats who worry more about if they got the right colored M&M's in their fancy dressing room and if the check has enough zero's. They used to be under contract and did whatever they were told. Even the so called bad movies were good if you ask me. I love the old Bob Hope and Bing Crosby movies. Or Jerry Lewis with and without Dean Martin. These guys used to love what they did. Even when they weren't getting paid to perform most of them could be found performing because they were spotted in an audience and asked to jump on stage or at some dump they liked to hang out at and work on a routine.

And Bob Hope did more to boost moral of the troops than anyone in history.I have so much respect for what he has done. Lets not forget what Jerry Lewis still does with the telethons every year. Talk about people who give back.

Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire,James Cagney, Donald o'Conner just to name a few of the guys I could watch dance forever and never get tired of it. Trivia moment:Fred Astaire had it in his contracts that every movie he did had to have him do at least one dance in tails. (Imagine trying to write that into every script.lol)And Gene Kelly didn't want to have Debbie Reynolds in her part in Singing in the rain but after he saw how hard she worked and how fast she learned he was very happy.

Re: Bet if you watched some clips of old TV and movies you would will be shocked!
Yep, the were literally owned by the studio's back then.

The sadiest example for me is the extremely talented Judy Garland. Poor girl. Starved to stay thin, had her bosom's wrapped so no one could see she was maturing. Given all kinds of drugs to help stay thin and work 24/7.

Family meant everything to Jerry Lewis. Both his parents were vaudeville performers. Lewis started performing at age five and would often perform alongside his parents in the Catskill Mountains in New York State. Otherwise, if my memory serves me, he was basically raised by his grandmother. He had trouble in school, and with anti-Semitism issues. He was devasted when his grandmother died.

This longing for family ties stayed with him, and was one of the reason it was so difficult for him to deal with the actions of Dean Martin and his divorce to his first wife.

This is what I meant about Ohio. He was the target of much ridicule for his broken English and ultimately dropped out of Steubenville High School in the 10th grade because
he thought that he was smarter than his teachers. He delivered bootleg liquor, served as a speakeasy croupier, was a blackjack dealer, worked in a steel mill and boxed as welterweight.

Finally, Debbie Reynolds. Gene Kelly, worked her until her feet bled. Debbie Reynolds wasn't a dancer until she was selected to be Gene Kelly's partner in Singin' in the Rain (1952). Not yet twenty, she was a quick study. Her Personal Quote: " Singin' in the Rain (1952) and childbirth were the two hardest things I ever had to do in my life."

Now my take on Doris Day. Beautiful, talented, singer, dancer, and actress. An All-American girl next door. It also amazes what a knock out body she had. At 5' 7", her measurements were 36-25-36.

The fact she is a huge dog lover, and advocate, just makes me want to kiss her!

In 2004, my area was under hurricane watch. So, what did I do? I hunkered down in my room with my dogs. Sitting there on the floor painting, with a pitcher of margaritas, watching a Doris Day movie.

Re: Bet if you watched some clips of old TV and movies you would will be shocked!
I still smile when I hear Debbie Reynolds talk about it. You know deep down in her heart she holds a special place for Gene Kelly. She has so much respect for his work ethic as many of the old timers had.I think she was 16 or 17 when she did that movie. I find that amazing.

Jerry Lewis worked as a bus boy at The Browns hotel in the Catskill's. I think every boy that went up there for the summers did that including my brother. lol They always treated the staff like shit too. lol But it sure did make my brother say he was going to do something in his life that didn't involve waiting tables, that's for sure. lol The hotels still hire kids that are saving for college and kids that want to preform in many cases. Jerry Lewis was known for cracking jokes to all the patrons of the hotel. The Brown's (Owners of the hotel) loved him and gave him his start. The still have bill boards up saying "The Catskill's where Jerry Lewis got his start" when you go up there. There used to be one for the browns hotel but not sure if its still there. I know it was as a kid they always had a cartoon version of Jerry Lewis on that billboard.Buddy Hackett was big up there as well as many other famous comedians.Mostly Jewish.

Doris Day had to the ultimate good girl next door. So perfect and had a voice and face that was just beautiful and she could make you laugh.

I couldn't even imagine them trying to put something like that together these days with all the inflated ego's and hefty price tags to go with those inflated egos. I think of shows like Batman, Bewitched or I love Lucy and all the names they had on those shows. Do you have any idea what it would be like to try to do any of those today. Well you couldn't because there aren't enough talented people to even come close even if they could afford it.

Yeah, she has a foundation for strays, I went through it when we found the cat with the messed up leg. Her foundation paid for the expensive amputation, the three legged cat has been with us for five years now, happy and grateful

Re: Bet if you watched some clips of old TV and movies you would will be shocked!
I am not that old! I hate when I hear myself saying things to my kids that used to come out of my mothers mouth or my grandmothers. I always seemed shocked when I name a famous Movie, TV show or famous person and I get the deer in headlights look. Then hear those horrible words "I never heard of them mom"
I think of many of these movies, shows and people as timeless. Especially these days when everything is on line or some obscure station that runs old shows like Petticoat Junction.Things just don't go into a vault anymore.

I can't remember what show it was that to save money the producers decided to use old tapes and just tape over them so the originals and I believe ONLY way to view the shows were gone forever. It might be Johnny Carson but wont swear to it.I just know when they were interviewed they said they thought the show would never need the tapes. They never expected the show to be that popular or valuable.Actually it can't be Johnny Carson that was film when that started. I am sure someone in WN land will know the answer. lol Kam, Josie or Kiss between the three of you with all the facts you guys have you could probable solve the problems of the world. One of you has to know this!(There are a few other "fact" people on here but haven't seen them lately.)

Re: Bet if you watched some clips of old TV and movies you would will be shocked!
I just watched one of those PBS things on the old Rowan and Martin's Laugh In. What an amazing array of people that made guest appearances on that show, including Richard Nixon. They showed one episode of their monologue that apparently, Dick Martin was late for, so the went over to the next studio and dragged Johnny Carson to step in and read Dick's cue cards. The jokes werent that funny, but Carson's spin on them sure as hell were! And of the regular cast members, the show certainly propelled Goldie Hawn to superstardom, and to a lesser degree, Lilly Tomlin
