Ahhh yes. Just another excuse for the perve to drink. Just what I need huh? I choose to sit outside, and only imbibe in adult beverage, only when I see an Arizona plate on a vehicle drive by. That should otta keep me in check, ya think? Happy Shamrocks to you all (no lepricons) another day. Thx patty. And

Re: St. Patricks.....coming soon!
.............ok, just remembered you asked for this!
"facts" first
St. Patrick's Day marks the Roman Catholic feast day for Ireland's patron saint, who died in the 5th century. St. Patrick (Patricius in Latin) was not born in Ireland, but in Britain.
Irish brigands kidnapped St. Patrick at 16 and brought him to Ireland. He was sold as a slave in the county of Antrim and served in bondage for six years until he escaped to Gaul, in present-day France. He later returned to his parents' home in Britain, where he had a vision that he would preach to the Irish. After 14 years of study, Patrick returned to Ireland, where he built churches and spread the Christian faith for some 30 years

Re: St. Patricks.....coming soon!
Damn Josie... That information is so going to kill my son. He always thought the holiday was to celebrate him. When he was little he really did think that the holiday was named for him. lol I have since explained he is no saint!
We also carried over a little tradition carried over from my ex's family. On St.Pat's day we used to tell the kids they had to get up real early to go to town hall and get their butts painted green. "All Irish had to get it done". Amazing how quick they remembered the Jewish part of their heritage then.lol The story I was told was that a few generations earlier someone in the family started telling that to the kids to get them to stay in bed a bit later. (The kids would think if they slept in it was to late to get it done.)I was told they used to have big parties for St. Patrick's day and didn't want to get up early with the kids. If the party was the night before they got to sleep in. If the party was that night they got to rest before the party. Either way it sure worked. My kids would beg us not to bring them down to town hall. We didn't even have a town hall. lol

Re: St. Patricks.....coming soon!
lol, I love that. I love traditions that spring up in families
tackling the green for St Patricks day next...
In the United States and elsewhere, it's customary to wear green on St. Patrick's Day. But in Ireland the color was long considered to be unlucky. Irish folklore holds that green is the favorite color of the Good People (the proper name for faeries). They are likely to steal people, especially children, who wear too much of the color.
and yes over here in the UK we are usually seen wearing giant green hats for some reason (usually only in the pub)

Re: St. Patricks.....coming soon!
Have to say I had to google Green Beer (so no it isn't a big thing over here in the UK, at least where I live lol)
Would be intereested to hear more about it sometime as the Web varies on just dying your beer green for St Patricks and "Green Beer Day" at Miami University. One of the Social Networking sites does seem to be promoting a Green Beer day, but it has already happened.

Re: St. Patricks.....coming soon!
It's just food coloring they put in the kegs to make the beer green. The problem is it freaks people out if the drink a lot and pee green. lol
There are many places that make green bagels as well. How that came about I will never understand . A bagel is a very Jewish thing, how did they get into the St. Pat's green thing ? Actually I think it was from all the parties that are held on St Patrick's day and when people order things they ask the bakeries and caterers to make as many things green as they can. Again, with all the food coloring it tends to leave your body that way and I remember one of my kids thinking he was dieing or something after going to the bathroom because "everything is green". lol I then had to explain to a young kid that it was from all the green bread, cookies, drinks and every other thing they put food coloring in for St. Patrick's day and then eating left overs for 2 days after that as well. lol By the way the bakeries will also color bread for baby showers pink or blue as well. I guess you can have just about anything colored any color these days. But it really is not very good for you. They have found that food coloring (which is in everything) is really not healthy.
I understand there is a city that even dies the local river or some water way Green every year. It was on the news because there was a problem one year. Also some environmentalists are saying its just not the smartest thing to do.

I do like the holiday, except for maybe the cabbage part, corned beef is pretty good...just don't care for the look, smell or taste of the cabbage that goes with it.

Re: St. Patricks.....coming soon!
I don't wanne spoil your St Patricks day. I read somewhere that the green of that day must remind everyone that during the famine in Ireland (1845-1850) people died with green mouths, caused by eating gras. That being the only thing left to eat.
A great book about this period and the times following, i think is "Trinity" by Leon Uris.
