Charity
Talked about this several years ago here.
Since it's "the season" and charities are being promoted even more, what are some of your favorites to give to?
Always make that donation for a paper poppy from the veterans.
Gotta love toys for tots, it's just wonderful what they do and it's just fun to chose a toy to donate.
I give as often as I possibly can to the local food pantry, tough time ya know, and since I live in a rural area, I know what I give is going to local families.

Re: Charity
I know it's really hard to give for many people this year. I know it is for us. When we can't give money we give time and even things that we can spare that maybe we have outgrown or don't really need. I do like the American Heart Association because that has a personal connection to my family . However we do mostly local things like If I know a family that is having a hard time I try to get a food basket together for them or bring needed items to local churches or businesses that have lists of families they get from Social Services and they distribute them. Even the school takes donations for families in need and or military families. There is also a group of entertainers that go around to needy places and do shows and distribute gifts. We try to get involved with them every year . Sometimes it can be a senior citizen group home or disabled group home. It can just be a matter of going and holding someones hand for a while. I am always shocked at how grateful someone is for something so small.

Re: Charity
about 10 years ago, i had quite the collecti0on of stuffed toys that i had gotten out of those coin operated crane machines. i was running out of room, so i gave them to the nuns that lived across the street from my mom at the time. they donated them to the Children's wing of Abbot Northwest Hospital in Minneapolis. the hospital gave them out to the kids who were there due to unforeseen circumstances (one child was there with his mom, because his dad was a victim of a drive by shooting).
then last year, after i broke up with my ex girlfriend, she left about 30 Santa Bears in my garage. i told her to come and get them, or i was getting rid of them. she never came, so i donated them to the local police station. the officers take them with them on domestic abuse calls, or to a fire scene, or anyplace where a child could be traumatized.

Re: Charity
On a regular monthly donation basis - Cancer research is always a big thing for me. Other than that as a family we support the Lifeguard services and other local small charities working with children and mental health charities as the last one is woefully underfunded in the UK.
There are also the physical things I do to help out at clubs and on trips away for children with difficulties and with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Re: Charity
The thought of giving gives me indigestion
Philanthropy is not my cup of tea
I dont believe in any cause
Good fairies or in Santa Claus
So save your breath My Little Chickadee
No one's ever gonna get a cent from me

Re: Charity
I had been giving rather generously to PBS and the Red Cross. The last usually with where it should go. Sometimes for local other times for a disaster.

Re: Charity
Here in China I will always give a few coins to the disabled guy pushing himself round on his - how to explain? - it's like a mechanic's sliding trolley for working under cars.Or the guy getting round on stumps for legs. Mind you some do the amputations on purpose to make a career of begging!
But the guy who can walk round with a can for money, and grabs your sleeve because you're a rich westerner and won't let go, nearly gets a thump from me.
And I detest the women who have a small group of scruffy kids who put on the 'help me' look, and wont let go of your leg as they pester you for a handout.
