Veteran's Day
To all veterans, saying we are thankful doesn't even begin to cover it.
To all our mititary, veterans and those currently serving.
I can think of no gesture as noble as the choice you made to serve.

Re: Veteran's Day
Want to also mention the thread "PenPals for our troops"
Maybe a good day to re-read, find the names of our members who are currently serving, and remember them too on this day.
Many are serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other foreign soil.

Re: Veteran's Day
My father was a WW II veteran, who I lost many years ago. I have his mementos that he gave to me, his purple heart, flag, his bloody one patch from the first division that he was in. He was also a medic.
I wanted to honor my father by having taps played. The funeral home said that could not be done. They only had a recording.
Don't tell me it can't be done. I started making phone calls and it did not take me long to find someone. He stood in the distance and played Taps, it was beautiful and so sad.
Someone stated to me..do you know who that was..he plays for the President in the Army band. I just smiled, nothing was to good for my father.
I salute you Dad, you were my hero, rest easy.

They are the ones who told me who he was, they were at my fathers gravesite holding the American Flag..it is something I will never forget.

Re: Veteran's Day
You may not be aware that in Australia we don't have Veterans Day as such, but at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month we have a minute's silence to remember the people who died in wars, not just Australian vets but anyone. But yes it focuses on veterans.
It's called Remembrance Day.
Red poppies used to be sold to wear on lapels. Poppies are symbolic of the killing fields in France in the first world war.
Most, if not all towns and cities have a war memorial that honour the soldiers, sailors and airmen who died. That's where people gather to remember.
ANZAC Day on the 25 April is another important day to honour servicemen and women. Big parades all over Oz, starting with a dawn service. Two up, a gambling game played with 2 pennies is played, then later in the morning there's a procession.

Re: Veteran's Day
Aw cool, we have the Red Poppies too. They are red paper poppies given for a donation by the Veterans. The veterans stand outside the markets with the poppies in one hand and a donation can in the other.
We do allot here on Veteran's Day, but wow, Australia sounds like the place to be!

Well I'm not sure what American vets do on their day of remembrance, but it may be "the place to be", if I mentioned that at the dawn service on Anzac Day, its cool, so quite a few returned service people (usually men) take bottles of rum and milk to drink afterward. And the games of two up are a lot of fun for them, because it reminds them of their days off after fighting. And renews their 'mateship' feelings. The law (as it should) turns a blind eye to the gambling for that one day of the year.

Re: Veteran's Day
In my area, we don't do enough, we hang flags, wear the poppies and local resturaunts offer free dinners to vets.
There are ceremonies at the local monuments.
Maybe, considering the sacrifice, we cold never do enough to convey our thankfulness.

Re: Veteran's Day
They were doing the poppy/donation thing several days before Veteran's Day here, just the one day I think, don't know why they didn't do it on Veterans Day, or up until Veterans day, I usually give everytime I run across the volunteer. Only got one poppy this year.

Re: Veteran's Day
If you all want a eye opener, think of this, 1,500 WWII vets are dying each day, only 10% of them are still alive. I am haunted by this fact, cuz i know i only have a limited time to be with my parents

I visited that and wished my father could have seen it.
