I know we've talked about Jake Brakes before OOMG...do you often go through areas where you see the signs that state "NO jake brakes"
I hear they are installing these are non commercial truck now...I wonder about that.

Re: JCSOS Thread
There's more places than ever that dissallow the use of those. Mostly because of those without muflers and brains.
A "Jake Brake" is also known as a compression brake. What it does is partially hold the exhaust valves open. that's what causes the noise. It's like a big compressor.
the ones on pickup trucks might make noise too but as muffled as they are, probably not much. Where they keep increasing the towing ability of pickups I think it's a good idea.

Re: JCSOS Thread
I never heard the term "Jake break" before I always heard it called air breaks. At least I think we are talking about the same thing. I didn't know they were prohibited anywhere. I know years ago truckers were so respected and most people around here liked driving on the trucker side of the roads (We have places where you can drive on the "No trucks" side or the "trucks allowed" side" because truckers were the best drivers. They also kept those trucks in the best shape. Some of them shined as if the guys polished them at every truck stop. What happened? Why do we have so many trucks that look like they are held together with duct tape if that and you hope the breaks work? Half these guys you read about you find out either have a dozen DWI's or no truck license at all? I miss the way it was.Is that just around this area? I know near the borders it's sometimes trucks from other countries and they don't have to meet the same safety standards as we have here.
FREE...I don't think with the little head you do because I don't have one. My head is actually on my shoulders and has something called a brain in it. And I would never take a bat to your knees. When I hurt someone I hurt them where it hurts most . Your a musician I would go for the hands. Are you sure your a NY'r? You aren't thinking like one. lol But I would never hurt you. I love you and you never treat me badly. Only licks and kisses for you.

Re: JCSOS Thread
Many of the trucks in your area are container haulers. Those are usually maintained with the same care as the chassis the containers get pulled around on. Trust me, this isn't a good thing.
Most don't go very far so they don't take care of stuff the way they should.
Most companies base thier maintanence on cost only and have the attitiude that "it's not broke completely" ====yet.
Then , when it breaks on the road, it's the drivers fault.
I take pride in how well I take care of mine. I know what it needs long before it needs it and replace/repair it as soon as possible.
There's also been much talk about the "Mexican" trucks. FRom what I've seen in CA and the southwest, they are better maintained than most in this country.
Not to mention, the driver from there know what the right lane is for.
A "jake brake" is called that as it's from Jacobs. I'm not sure if that's the company that makes 'em or just a name now. They are all compression brakes.
Air brakes are what makes the truck stop. The braking system on these use air instead of hydraulics [brake fluid]. They also have springs in the brake chambers for parking and incase of a loss of air pressure. It makes the truck stop.

Re: JCSOS Thread
I like asking you. I feel like I get a better answer from someone who actually knows about this stuff. Thanks for explaining all that for me.
I really miss some of the guys we used to see all the time when we traveled up to our other house every weekend up state NY.They were so much fun I remember everyone would talk on the CB radio's and it always made for a much faster trip.
Some of their trucks were so cool to. I had never realized that many of them were like campers in those cabs. Our family got to know some of the guys and would stop for coffee sometimes and show all us kids the insides of those fancy trucks. The elaborate paint jobs were also amazing. I know some cost more than my current house.
I also thought it was so nice that they all seemed to look out after each other and had done everything from weather and traffic reports to updates on people that might have been MIA because they had things going on in their lives like weddings, vacations, illness. etc. It's like their own little world and they were very protective of it. God help anyone that cut one of them off or some other stupid thing.lol

Re: JCSOS Thread
Yes, unfortunately, those days are gone. Hardly anyone listens to thier cb anymore. They're busy on phone, texting, watching a dvd and so on.
Most won't even move over if there's someone on the shoulder.
The custom paint and huge sleepers still exsist. However, a standard truck is now close to $120,000
I'm not sure of the cost of a custom sleeper. Those mostly are set up like a motor home, with shower, sink, refrig, toilet stove etc. ITC is one of the manufacturers. You could look at thier site.

Yeah I just can imagine how many kids do that and the parents jump out of there skin then the trucker blows that horn. I remember by dad telling us to do that the first time and just said " do it and see what the trucker does" . We all got so excited about it. I now look back and wonder if my mom thought "I'm going to kill him for teaching these kids that." We did it at every truck we saw. lol There were a lot! I bet she couldn't wait for us to all fall asleep. lol I'm so calling my mom to ask her now. By the way we always had the 2 German Shepard's with us so you can just imagine what would happen when a truck went by with 5 kids and 2 dogs when they blew that horn. lawl

Three were hers. Two were step kids, my dads from a previous marriage. And the two large dogs. She has earned a metal of some type for sure! Those were the days of big station wagons with the extra seat in the back and you could sit in the part without a seat if you wanted to. If there was a place for you ass you could sit there. I loved sitting in the part with no seat so I could stretch out and sleep with my head resting on one of the dogs as a pillow. We would fight to sit back there.

Re: JCSOS Thread
I see those in Arizona all over the mountains. I didn't know what they were at first. It looks like a road to no where but really short. Kind of steep (Up hill) all gravel.Obviously they are angled into the mountain rather than over the side of it. I think some have something at the end too but cant remember what. I will have to ask my mom. I understand they get used A LOT out there. I know the mountains are pretty steep and I guess if you lose your breaks with a loaded truck or even a car on some of those roads you want to have one of those around. I know they are well marked so the drivers know they are coming up so they have time to prepare.

Kinda annoying when the cop is in the next lane, going the other direction and the guy in front is freaked out enough to go the next hour or so way under the speed limit.
But hey, that's why I always leave early enough, if it's not that, it's a tractor or school bus with allot of stops.

Re: JCSOS Thread
I have no patience for stupidity especially when it causes others to be in a dangerous position. I love the people that decide they put their signal on so they can pull into your lane. It doesn't matter if your there or if they don't bother to look. They seem to think that signal is all they need. Then there are those that are in such a hurry no matter what lane your in and even though you have people in front of you they are going to ride your bumper. Or the ones that do something really dangerous to pass you only to beat you to the red light. No one should be in that much of a hurry. I don't want me or people I care about to get hurt or die because someone didn't leave them-self enough time. So be late or reschedule but stop being an idiot!

It's kind of funny about the tail-gaters. They can get within 5 feet of a semi trailer and think nothing of it.
However, a truck gets withn 50 feet of that car and they're tailgating. Even if the truck driver plans on passing.
Don't people realize they can die just as easily from tailgating a semi as getting run over from one?

This was kind of amusing.
Went to Joplin then reloaded there for Minneapolis. As soon as I got onto 71 toward KC, the volt gauge went down to 12.5. Not a good thing where it should be 14.
I did make it to KC and replaced the alternator. Kind of surprizing concidering how much electricity it takes to run one of these engines.
Anyways, ya'll need to change an alternator on a 230 degree engine in 100 degree heat.
Damn that was fun!!!

Re: JCSOS Thread
I don't remember if Chazzy asked about trucking shows. There's one on Speed channel called American Truckers. The episode that's on now about the truck part of the relief effort in Joplin. While sad, the film of the devastation there is amazing. Last I've seen anything close to that was a year after Andrew went thru south FL.
They not only brought in supplies, but also mobile surgical units, large generators and more.
They showed a semi cab that the wind had taken and wrapped around a tree. Destroyed the truck of course, but bent the frame rails so they more closely resemble a horseshoe or trail rails for a corner.
