The universal hand gesture
Have you ever used it? How often do you use it? When, where do you use it the most, like in traffic? Are you most often apt to use it towards strangers? Do you use it jokingly with friends, family?
How about recieving it? Do you return it, if someone gives it to you? Is it common or uncommon where you live?

I jokingly use with friends at work,when it is given to me.I can't think of any other time.
Rarely see it in any situation around here anyway.

Well, so I must be the bad one. I learned it when I was about 11 yo. from a 13 yo. friend. And, she should be the correct way, (there is a right and wrong way).
It was basically used to intiate teasing, for sex, love, or affection. I have it with me in numerous photo's. I've learned not to use this expression in photo's any longer, since my niece is now 13 yo.
I've used it during other situations in my car and with my brother... Seemed the appropriate signal when dealing with assholes.

Gotta be careful in traffic, never know if a nut and if they'll follow you.
Having to live with ex because I have to sell my house, no choice, I've used it a lot I admit. When she walks away

It's about the same for me, I was reading something that prompted the post, while reading I stopped to think and couldn't remember the last time I used it.

A few of my teenage Chinese students give it to me sometimes in class (even a couple of the girls). Especially if they are not in the mood to learn.
And they know what it means!
So I give it back.
Then we are even.
Oh and of course it surfaced again when I was teaching them the names of the fingers.
It was pretty funny actually cos I knew what was gonna come up...the middle finger!!

I use it daily..mostly with tourists driving too fast. Actually..in originated in the middle ages for the archers. They cut off your index finger so you couldn't shoot a bow and arrow..thus you got the finger to show you were disfigured..

haven't gotten nor given this in a very long time. Most people I encounter now wave and use all their fingers. i do the same.
I do think there's a finger anonymous group, but also think it's not about this subject.

Australian drivers, especially in the country areas, when they pass, often give a one finger wave. No not THAT finger; the index/pointer.
