As Seen On TV
If you dont live in the US or Canada, you may not get this. Have you bought any "As Seen On TV" products, and if so, what has been your experience? You know, the miracle break through things that you dont know how you ever lived with out. The ones that are typically $19.99. The ones that the Announcer always interjects "But wait! Order within the next 5 minutes and we'll DOUBLE your order! (just pay separate shipping and handling)" Sham Wow? Snuggie? Shark Cleaner? Miracle Pasta or Egg Makers? Oxy Clean? The Bracelet that gives you energy? The foot wrap that you wear to bed that sucks all of the negative things out of your system?
I tried the Topsy Turvey. It made sense. After all, I figured that some inventer guy knew a better way to grow tomatoes than God did. 3 words - Piece Of Crap.

Re: As Seen On TV
Yes, my dad wanted me to buy the Topsy Turvy. I can kill plants and only own weeds. My Aunt and I discussed it and it is nothing. I don't even think you get tomato seeds. and, I can crack my own eggs, cut my own brownies. I don't care to have a bunch of shit in my house. My girlfriend loves the Snuggi a friend gave her. I prefer a just wrap up in a throw.
Let's see how many new ones they come out with since Christmas is coming around the corner, and it is sell, sell, sell!!!

Believe me TV everywhere not just US has these 'infommercials' often on Oz TV at 3 am before the Jimmy Swaggart's televangelism shows. Usually US salespeople, or the ad simply replayed as it is but local shipping details for local audiences/consumers. I never bought any, could see the crap for what it was. Or was annoyed so much by 'the sell'.
Aussies will remember Tim Shaw for the steak knives (" wait there's more", who was parodied on Aussie TV comedy shows.
But in the shops, yes I bought. I used to have a whole drawer of gadgets to chop, slice, dice and peel. A knife ended up being the best allrounder though after the $9.99 thing broke.
But get this..on Chinese trains, some of the railway staff go along the aisle spruiking about gadgets - socks for tired feet, microwaveable bags of gel to put on aching body parts, toys, 'jade' necklaces or other trinkets and they do a roaring trade to a captive audience.

Re: As Seen On TV
i've never actually ordered things off TV, but i have bought stuff "as seen on TV" in the stores. here's how things turned out...
Miracle Blades (knives): they seem to work all right, i use the rock 'n chop more than the actual knives themselves.
the EGG-stractor (to remove the shells from a hard cooked egg with ease): some one brought one in to the restaurant where i work. i was able to get it to work, it shelled about 75% of the eggs i tried. but you need to be tall, or have a lower table to make it work properly, because you need to get the right angle.
Kansas City Slider Station (makes sliders aka mini burgers):
works ok, but the bottom of the burger gets done faster than the top of the burger. i tried using other meats as well, breakfast sausage worked decently, i also cooked eggs in this, they gave the best results. (i did NOT pay the $19.99 retail price, i got it for $2 at the dollar store)

Re: As Seen On TV
This is but related.
A few years ago, I bought a kitchen [dinning] table from Shopko. Price was about $100. After buying it, the carton said "Made in Vietnam" Then it was bought by a place in ID, sent to Chicago, then to Green Bay, WI then to the store in SD where I bought it.
Now, it's a nice table and chairs. Had to do some assembly of course but it's proved to be very sturdy.
This left me wonderin'. How can ANYONE make a product, pay for labor, shipping to so many places and still make a profit?
It's the same for most of what's discussed here.

Re: As Seen On TV
Ok, not to piss on anyone's cornflakes about the whole Snuggie thing (sorry Kam) but their latest commercial with the music to Macharena in the back ground is enough to make me want to throw my damn TV out the window. Its right up there with "Its My Money And I Need It NOW!"

Okay, this looked hysterical. Maybe if you try it you can let me know otherwise.
'Snuggie Sutra' Brings Blanket With Sleeves Into Bedroom"
A duo frequently share their strange Snuggie sex tips. These include "The Tablecloth," a position meant for "beginners" in which the woman lies on her back and puts her legs through a Snuggie's sleeves with the rest of the blanket covering her, and "The Matador," in which the Snuggie is used as a role-playing prop during some bizarre bullfighting fantasy.

Funny how many people think of caps as being yelling instead of the content. I for one do not. Obviously.
He is new to the site and doesn't know the rule. I still am not offended by it in anyway.

I could have been a whole lot ruder, more direct. Instead I chose to inject a little humour into my post, which is more my style.
But I'm not a mod so it's really not my duty.

Typing in all caps is not a site rule, it's internet ettiquette also referred to as Netiquette, it's not that big of a deal around here unless it causes a misunderstanding. We didn't just "make it up" as a rule on this site.
I too, am glad you joined us here, eightyeight. As newbie and longtack pointed out, yes...typing with the cap lock on is considered aggressive and yelling on the internet forums, emails, messages and chatrooms, we all make some mistakes, allot of us have been warned, corrected, had our posts edited, deleleted or locked. It's not a big deal really. I don't know what else to say, so I'll send you a personal message dear.
So back on topic now?
Billy Mays (RIP) always yelled in his commercials, I wonder if he typed with the cap lock on?
That's a joke, people....a segway joke.

typing all caps, although considered as yelling? it also depends on the context of what is being said, as to whether it's considered to be rude or offensive.

Although on the topic of buying things I am a gadget freak, have drawers and drawers of kitchen specials. My husband despairs

Re: As Seen On TV
Hadda bump this back up based on my recent experience with the Shark Steam Mop. I'm a clean freak to begin with and have been using a Swifter for years, and always liked what it did, but it did have its limitations. However, after using the Shark, the Swifter will be gathering dust. Everything that they show on the infommercial is absolutely true. And even better than the Steam Mop is the small hand held unit. You can do countertops, appliances, clean blinds, bathtubs, hell, you can even steam wrinkles out of clothes. Like I said, I'm a clean freak, but I never knew how dirty this place was until I got the Shark Products. And no chemicals!

Re: As Seen On TV
If something is being pushed with high pressure sales tactics, I will flat refuse to buy, even if I have been wanting it for years. If you want to turn me off,or away the absolute quickest way is with lies, deceit,or high pressure.I notice even very little seeming insignificant, actions or words that are meant to be subtle, subconscious ,subliminal messages and it is an immediate off switch for me.Things in movies are like that too, such as car chase scenes where they pass the same cars over and over, or the same car losing 6 hubcaps. How about the Dukes destroyers of Chargers, you could see the car bend in the middle as it landed, then be perfect, 2 seconds later. Deception turns me off. Hardrock
