I think you are absolutely right majykole.
Unfortunately privacy gets intruded upon, invaded, and often without the individual's consent. I am thinking of those companies e.g. who monitor employee's email at work. OK maybe the company has a right to check on employee's work because abuse of email costs them productivity.
But it's still an abuse of rights to me.
With the range of electronic eavesdropping available now, things like phonetapping, monitoring of text messages, email, browsing history, plus general surveillance of everything we do makes our private doings available to a whole range of people. Granted, I'd like to see people who abuse kids, do crimes, locked up with the use of these technologies, but when is the line crossed? It used to be that governments and police needed some authorisation to invade people's privacy but now it seems to have all gone by the board.
Moreover, and in relation to celebrities, we WANT to know about Victoria and Beckham's intimate lives. So it's a vicious circle.
Secrecy is the other side of the coin. It's less problematic, just a reaction or a preventive measure we take to (try to) ensure our privacy.

and that's the way it should be, especially for law abiding citizens.
There's a saying, 'you might not be interested in politics, but politics is interested in you'.
Politics is all about power; the use and abuse of power.
It follows that power leads to control and ways to control people, what they do and what they think.
Knowing what people think is crucial to advertising, which is why polling occurs around election time - to stay in or get power.
So, political polling too. Cos once you know how and what people think, is central to ways to control them, us.
That's not far from invasion of privacy in the ways I mentioned above, by govts, state agencies as well as corporations.
The net is perfect for that!
And I don't believe it's limited to places like China, but in western democracies too. It's more overt here, people get arrested for what they think (that never happens in US?? terrorists for sure but never to private citizens?) ...and more subtle/covert in the US eg. CIA - FBI - priv investigators, your neighbours?

Indeed. The 128 bit encryption algorithm that couldn't be cracked by the FBI/CIA was classed as a munition for many years (they had a supercomputer which made short work of the more common 56 bit algorithm at the time!).
Even what you think is private probably isn't...
Then again, it was the New York Times that alerted Osama that his electronic communication was being monitored, so free speech has it's price too

privacy is being able to have ur stuff out w/o fear of having someone go thru it or steal
secrecy is hiding it cuz u dont have privacy and either it'll be taken, gone thru or looked over and probably questioned on it.

Re: Privacy/ secrecy
I think privacy is about doing things without everyone knowing and secrecy is about keeping facts hidden.
