Re: fireplaces
Had at least one to two fires every month this year except for July...strange for Calif. Must be global warming..

Re: fireplaces
Haven't had to burn any yet. Haven't even started getting firewood for the season.
Nothing like a nice fire on a cold snowy night though.

Hopefully before you set them on fire. It doesn't work out so well on the living room floor.

Getting rid of ashes and other debris from fireplaces can be a problem. I'd think they'd be good for lawns. That's IF ya can get them out there without droping 'em all over the house. Then of course, there's the cleaning the chimney.

Re: fireplaces
i was told by a farmer that ashes are the worst thing for your garden guess there is a lot of acid in them then ya need to put lots of lime in
i have a brush with a 40 foot handle i use to use for the wood stove now that i got a fireplace I'm not so sure how to do it and the flue stick up about ten fee above the roof. now tonight i found out the chimney for the old cook stove that use to be in the kitchen, i notice that there was water Marks running down the wall so i pulled the pie plate that was over it it was rotten on the bottom and had holes in it , but to my surprise i got a big rats nest in side the hole and its filled to the bottom of the hole with ashes and pink insulation and grass and leaves ... a squirrel nest? but there no clean out trap on the bottom of the chimney.... but i love it being able to camp in my living room lol

Re: fireplaces
Depends on your soil and where you live. I use them here in our clay soil and works wonders. You can also use them to make lye water, which is used to make soap.. Kinda strong, but no chemicals to screw with ya...just a bit of info in case...

very funny, lol It is a black panel you put on side of house and the air from house is drawn into panel heated by the sun and when hot enough fan comes on and draws more air in and blows the hot air out the top,

True but more complex, specially since live in a climate where it gets below freezing often.I have a solar hot water system that I built my self.Built the panels and all.works well and I love it. I am a solar man all the way.

Re: fireplaces
It's mostly oak here too...have 3 different kinds, lasts longer anyway and I'm too lazy to go out in the snow a lot. Mostly use the other for starter...have tamerack up about 6-7 thousand feet, only get it when on a joy ride or after all the tourists leave.

Re: fireplaces
the native do and ya can take classes at the tech, they even have them for making birch bark canoes, watched show about it on PBS they were going out to get ceder roots to make tread or rope from to hold them together, i want Mr's k to take one they would make a nice addition to the decor . we took a trip to grand portage MN, there is a old fort and indian vilage there from the old fur trade, thay also had a building were they buit the canoes and stored them on the gunflint trail , it was a old indian trail too to get around the upper and lower falls . it was about 6 miles , they had to carry all the furs and supplys between the upper river and portage on lake superior... don't wade in the pigeon river its full of leaches and Bactria..them must of been the days back in the 1600's i think i was born a few years too late.but we did do a lot of hiking in mn arrowhead region and took lots of picktures of waterfalls....
