Re: slumlords, how have ya dealt with them in the past?
I haven't rented in a long time. I had mostly good landlords, but I've had some bad ones too.
I had a job once, worked for a man that had tons of rental property and a personality disorder. It was hell arguing with him about things that had to be done and getting him to focus and prioritize.

depending on the condition if you can get enough ppl to sign a pettion and nothing happens if im not mistaken legal action may be an option (not good on law stuff)

Re: slumlords, how have ya dealt with them in the past?
Depends on local laws, (state to city)
Here, you can't with hold rent money until repairs are done, but you can pay the rent into an escrow account where the landlord can't recieve it until the repairs are done. This prevents renters from using any excuse at all to not pay the rent, or claim repair problems only when they suddenly can't afford the rent. This whole set up sometimes takes a mediator.

Re: slumlords, how have ya dealt with them in the past?
I own a condo and I've been dealing with this. The condo bylaws are written that any leak from outside the condo association is responsible to repair, as most of the outside building is inaccessible. The building is made with stucco and we got this stupid 'decorative' stucco that separates a little from the building from time to time...
It's been five years since it started leaking and they still refuse to repair it. I've talked with a few people and basically the only way to get them to do anything is to sue them for the repairs.

Re: slumlords, how have ya dealt with them in the past?
well i been told by the dept of justice since he is unwilling to do maintenance or unable, that i can terminate the lease and move out, he hit me with a 5 day pay up... i am going to judacare tomorrow, i also had c.a.p. community action program inspect the place, it failed and they told us not to pay and move out.I'm having the city building inspector come in and also filed a complaint with consumer protection .i payed this guy a 1000.00 bucks and told him we be back in a week to move in , he had to clean the carpets, the 2ND bedroom smells like nasty shitty baby diapers and a big paint spill garbage in the garage i also found a big brown rats nest under all of it, i have seen black squirrels and gray ones and some gophers, but brown? also a new shower curtain and the washer repair guy never came too, its been seven months. i did send him certified mail saying get on the ball ya got 30 days he got pissed off and came shaking his fist at me with my letter in it and tried to get me to sign a paper saying i never called him....BS... its now getting on 90 days now . also haven't gotten a water bill from him yet to.

Re: slumlords, how have ya dealt with them in the past?
Being a renter is great, if the place sucks just look for another place and move out. Most states have a lot of laws that protect the renters, and you've definitely done the legwork to cover your ass if he feels like doing anything stupid like suing you for lost income from not giving notice of leaving.
As far as trying to protect the following renter, its kinda like the same situation you got yourself into. If you did some legwork and checked out the place before you moved in, you wouldn't be in this situation, and the same would go to them. An honest landlord doesn't want their renters to be constantly changing. The less the renters change, the less chance of having an empty apartment for several months.

Re: slumlords, how have ya dealt with them in the past?
When you post that you're definitely going to be looking for a new place, I got some retaliation ideas that will help prevent people from moving in that take a tour of the place first, or force the landlord to do extensive repairs to the place. I'll message you them so webnaughty isn't liable for any of this

Re: slumlords, how have ya dealt with them in the past?
guess we were told to write a notice to vacate in 30 days and a notice to terminate the lease since he do want to clean and do maintenance, was also to ya cant hold back rent by legal action , but the pamphlets consumer protection sent says yes you can by WI law ya can since he don't want to maintain it. i think we deserve clean carpet and painted Walls and working power and plumbing. also reading on msn landlords been getting away with crap for years and i agree i have been burned so many times in the past

Re: slumlords, how have ya dealt with them in the past?
You're better off getting out of a place like that anyways. Cops usually aren't the ones that serve those kinds of papers, so the guy probably just has a cop friend and is doing it to scare you off since you're a vocal tenant.
You'll be getting a PM from me soon

Tell the state. WI has a really great system to handle things like this. Plus, they will definately be interested in knowing everything he's doing. Explain exactly what the eviction notice says.

There's a site for everything, just google bad landlord list.
Also there's the other ones, you see them on TV, they are for contractors, doctors, plumbers...... everything!

Re: slumlords, how have ya dealt with them in the past?
i will have to do that chazzy, i went to the cop shop and was given a Summons.. looks like he's suing for 1 months rent plus 25 for being late,, hey I'm only 3 weeks late and he wants to boot me out lol... what i cant believe is he thinks he's above the law? is he so cheap he's not being advised? i mean the book is quite clear, no retaliations and so on...mean while i might go fishing time to smoke some bullheads
