Prayers Needed
This past weekend we went out on the motorcycles with some friends of ours to go have some lunch and just hang out. We had left one place and were headed to another when the third bike in our group did not see us stop to turn. They ran into the first bike in our group. He didn't get very hurt, some road rash and a big bruise on one leg.
They did, and are both in the hospitals down here, separated from each other by at least 50 miles. Since Saturday night, neither has woken up. The husband has head trauma (no, we weren't wearing helmets, more on that later), a fractured rib and a punctured lung, however, the general consensus is that he will survive and come out of it, as he is taking breaths on his own against the ventilator and moving his arms and legs.
The wife is far worse, although their injuries are very similar in nature, they had to take a piece of her skull out to allow the brain to swell unimpeded. She is in a medically induced coma to allow her brain to rest and they are hoping that this will help it to heal. Other than that, she has a lot of road rash (she was wearing shorts and a tank top) and a broken scapula.
Please pray for them, the husband is like my older brother, his wife like my sister. Pray that a miracle will happen and His will be done, as we have been since Saturday night.
As to helmet, we will be wearing them from now on. The sad part is that it takes a tragedy like this to jolt you out of the "it'll never happen to me." mindset. If you ride, please, wear your helmet, no matter how hot or uncomfortable it is.

Re: Prayers Needed
I think the worst part was seeing them go past us and realizing that she had no notion of what was coming. I saw their bike hit our other friends bike, heard the husband say "oh shit" and watched as they both flew off and hit the road, which was burning hot.
The five of us had been having such a great time (we were one short that day, as our other friends wife had things to do and could not come), we always do with them, and to see it in thirty seconds or less all go to hell...well, we all feel so guilty, you know how it is, "if we hadn't done this or had done that, maybe it wouldn't have happened."
Two inches more to the right and it would have been 4 of us down on that little road in the middle of nowhere.
*********
I do have some better news about them now, though, the husband was moving his arms and legs today, even tried to bite the doctor when they went to suction out his throat around the ventilator tube.
The wife is looking a little better today, some of the swelling has gone down and she looks more like herself, although they had to take all her beautiful hair away. Her IBP was better today. The nurse told us last night that she seems to like being in the coma.
I just want to see them well again. Thank you everyone for the wishes and prayers. They are so appreciated and felt.

Re: Prayers Needed
My prayers are with you guys. Life happens and you are not in control so take it easy on yourself sweetie. As far riding in short and helmet less - don't! I just started riding in the spring. Took a New Riders course at the Local HD Dealer. They stress the need for proper gear. Helmet, gloves, long pants and ankle high boots at a minimum. Please ware a helmet sweetie!
love ya!

Re: Prayers Needed
well, it's been a week now and there is some good news.
The wife is being weaned off of the penobarbitol (I think that's the right name, it may be Pentobarbitol). They won't know until she wakes up (could be as little as three days or as great as five) whether there is any significant or lasting brain damage (keep praying, please). They are saying she is in a 'natural' coma now. She did move her hand when one of her cousins was in there on Saturday and she was still in the chemical coma then, so we have hope. The swelling has gone down significantly and she looks sooo much better.
The husband's family was told today that he has a chance at a full recovery, though it will be many months. He is 'aware' but not 'awake.'More later

Re: Prayers Needed
Please do.
The wife is off of the coma meds, but they say if she does not show signs of waking up by tomorrow that the family needs to think about ending life support.
The husband is temporarily back in a coma due to a high fever and blood pressure. But at least the ventilator is out of his mouth. It has been put into a tracheotomy in his throat.

Re: Prayers Needed
The doctors told us that she was gone the moment she hit the road. So basically for three weeks, we were keeping her body alive, her soul was gone and what made her her, would never want to come back to this existence. At least it was an easy passing. They took the machines off and she just kind of faded away after a few hours.
The husband is awake (ish) he woke up Saturday, recognized his sons, his parents and us when we went to see him later that afternoon. He has a trach in for the moment, so he can't talk, and as of yet, he does not know the his wife is not here. He's kind of in that twilight zone where he reacts, and seems aware, but won't remember anything of it once he becomes really awake.
The wife's funeral is tomorrow.

Re: Prayers Needed
Thank you, everyone for everything. The husband started coming out of it 2 days after his wife went Home. He has made great progress, and been transferred yesterday to a rehabilitation facility near the hospital. He has some memory problems still at this time, we saw him this past Saturday and he knew who we were, but Sunday he didn't remember that we'd been there. Said he remembers 'riding and sliding' but not who he was riding with. The doctors are still recommending that he not be told, however, the family has decided to go ahead and tell him, since the meds are contributing to his paranoia and delusions. He thinks he's in a lockdown of some sort and that she put him there, which is why he hasn't seen her. He may have to be told daily for a while that she's gone.
Keep 'em up, please, they're still needed.
