March 15, 1985
Found this on a news site this morning....
*************************************
It was 25 years ago -- March 15, 1985 -- that the first dot-com domain name appeared on the Internet, ushering in the commercial age of the World Wide Web.
First 100 dot-com Web sites took two years to get up and running
Some 80 million dot-com domains now registered
Report says 99.9 percent of all Internet growth as occurred over past 15 years
*******************************************
25 years! I think I first went online about 10 years ago or so....until then, I only used computers for inventory and work related documents.
I do remember when PC's at first were pretty out of reach for most in price, and I remember when the prices started rapidly dropping, the market was crowded and competitive and dial-up was the only choice.
How long have you been "online" now? What was your first computer and connection like? What were some of the first things you did when you first started web surfing and going online?

Re: March 15, 1985
My first computer was a PC that with a printer included cost just under $3,000. Unbelievable by today's standards. I think that was around 1995. Got my first laptop in 1999 and my second one in 2005, which I still use. I would never have a desktop again. Im currently looking to upgrade to a smaller, sleeker notebook as well as switching from a regular cell phone to a smartphone so I can get email wherever I am.
For internet, I got sucked in by one of those Free 100 minutes of AOL CD's. For the longest time, I mostly just used it for email and chat rooms. Now, I'm online all day long, usually with about 10 websites open all day. I never use a phone book at all anymore, never get a newspaper, I listen to radio online, I search ads online, if I need to get an oil change etc, I search out prices and coupons. I've purchased and sold things online, advertised for employees online and I get ALL of my sheetmusic online. The only thing I wont do online is buy shoes. Did it once. Never again.
This is an interesting topic Chazzy. It'll be cool to see other people's stories!

Oh yeah, and of course it was dial up. I always carried a phone cord with me when I traveled to be able to plug into any available phone. Now that was just sad!

Wow! The internet is two months older than me!
I can't really remember the first time I was online or my first CPU, although I do remember looking at lots of porn sites at 15

Re: March 15, 1985
Ah Free! Yep...those free trial AOL CDs. They use to be everywhere, in the mailbox, free at the checkout lines at markets and stores.
I'm recalling that my first online searches were for Early American History, I'm such a history freak.I remember looking up Revolutionary and Civil War battle flags, and definitly jumped right on to looking up the site for the "Hunley" the conferderate civil war submarine that had been at that time recently located.
I was just bugged eye (still am!) over the whole internet experience.

OH yeah, all those free trial CDs....don't see them anymore, kind of a shame, cuz we would string up the sun reflecting iridescent discs in our gardens to scare away birds and squirrels. They worked quite well.

Re: March 15, 1985
In the late 90's, you could get an EMachines 386 computer for $100 with a 24 month contract with Compuserve. Things certainly have changed in a relatively short period of time, havent they? I'll bet there's people on here that dont even know what Compuserve or a 386 was! Or its predecessor, a 286! One of the first computers I ever used was a Wang. SO many things were wrong about that name. And yes, I took advantage of making the jokes, every chance I got!

Got my first computer from Gateway, are they even doing business anymore? Can't remember when I last saw an advert from them.
I remember eBay being one of the first sites I spent time on.

Re: March 15, 1985
I bought my first puter in 2002. It's a HP laptop that was about %2400. Still have it. I now have a HP laptop that I bought in about 2005 this one cost $1000 and is much lighter and more efficient.
