Modern animation
I love it...everything from Disney/Pixar full length movies to 30 second commercials.
The Madagascar movies I can't resist watching, I haven't had the pleasure of catching "Up" yet, but I know I will.
I'm fascinated with the detail of the work. I have no idea how they do what they do but I know I do love the finished work.
Even in commercial and movie spots, they do this 360 degree "stop motion" thingy, where everything is in stop- motion, they do a complete 360 around it, but one person is still moving about in the scene. That, I think...is just way cool.

Re: Modern animation
i've always loved animated movies! modern CGI style movies are amazing. i think the animation for "Fantastic Mr. Fox" looks kinda old school...kinda like the old Rankin Bass Holiday classics.

Re: Modern animation
360 Degree Views are designed by a series of cameras positioned around the subject. Depending on the number of cameras in which you want to use, the best bet is 24. One second of film produces 24 frames. Each camera, hooked together, films one frame apart from each other. To get the 360 degree motion effect, you'd need simply splice one or two frames from each camera together.
I studied it in school. If you'd like to see an example, find the Matrix vol 1. On the extras CD, there's an excerpt that explains it in greater detail. I'm currently working on a couple of short films, but they're becoming very time consuming. Add that to I have to self-teach-me how 3-d animation formats work and I've got a lot of stuff to do. I'll let you know when I do a run through...

Re: Modern animation
Yes GG! The Matrix is a great example of what I was thinking of!
I'm googling right now LandH, Rankin Bass - I think that's what we use to call "claymation".....taking clay forms and using stop motion filming to create an anmimated film. I love 'em too....kinda like all the lego clips on utube.
I'm trying to look up "CGI style movies" and I'm getting everything from "The Wizard of Oz" to "Toy Story" so exactly what does "CGI" stand for by the way?

Re: Modern animation
i think it's "Computer Generated Images". Claymation is different from Rankin Bass, Rankin Bass uses other forms of puppets, not really sure what they're made from, most likely felt and wood. Claymation gained popularity when California decided to use "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" to promote their Raisin crops!

I love claymation, Gumby, old Mr. Bill Show from Saturday Night Live, Chicken Run, The Koala Brothers, Davy, and one more I cannot recall.
Actually, I love all animation and enjoy painting the characters.

Re: Modern animation
CGI and animation are two different animals. Movies created solely by animation are done so by computer, the characters, backgrounds, and everything. While CGI assists character actors with the help of green and blue screening. A really great example of CGI can be seen from the movie, "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" with Jude Law. The entire movie was shot in green screen format. No matter how the movie did, that's acting, not being able to see who or what your interacting with...

Re: Modern animation
The SYFY show "Sanctuary" uses CGI for all the backgrounds, they haven't built any sets at all. From what I understand the only things real are the people.

Re: Modern animation
OH gawd, thanks for mentioning "Chicken Run" Iwant2kssuallovr ....I love that movie.
Correct me if I have the names wrong but "Wallace and Grommit" possible claymation too I think???
I've never watched "Sanctuary"...but I've seen their spots where they have mentioned using only green screen HandW, (to promote "going green" ) Looks like a pretty good sci fi show.
I've been pretty impressed with modern animation (in the correct definition that GG gives) with the Shrek Movies, the textiles and hair...just amazing...not sure how they pull that off.

yep...and they just released a new movie on DVD...Wallace & Gromit in a Matter Loaf or Death. it's hilarious! Aardman Entertainment (i think) is the name of the company that created W&G...along with Chicken Run, and Flushed Away and a few others that i can't remember. they also have a show called Creature Comforts..that's a cute one...(W&G also had a spin off that lead to a short tv series. Shaun the Sheep!)
