How do you react to the Salvation Army Bell-ringers? The man w/the "Need Help"sign on the corner?

Re: Charity
I would give some money to the salvation army, i give money for all illnesses, everyone ringing my bell and looking sincere gets some. People asking me money on the street get nothing from me. I look at it real black and white.
So far.......
When the tsunami hit in 2004 a lot of people gave money, if you see what did happen to that money , i would not give it again.

Re: Charity
I always try to give a little, even if it is only change. The Statue of Liberty was erected due to the change of the citizens of America.
I see some of my friends disregard helping others when they have the means, much more than I. I'd prefer to help anyone that would appreciate is SO MUCH more than my spoiled friends or relatives.

Re: Charity
I think giving change has to have a purpose too and that's not buying booze or drugs.
I was in Dakar, Africa and there a young boy asked me for some money, i took some coins out of my pocket and doing so my paper money fell out. The boy was real fast, grabbed the money ad gave it back to me. I took all my coins and gave them to him. That's when you know something useful will be done with that money.

When the Tsunami hit,my oldest daughter put donation jars for the Red Cross all over town. She ended up getting a lil recognition for it & I was proud of her thoughtfulness....most Tweens are pretty selfish.

Re: Charity
I didn't mean any bad news about the people walking the streets for the collections, nothing but good for them, willing to put in their time and effort. I mean, most of the organizations have gotten so big that more money is spend keeping those organizations alive than helping the people. Some of them look like multinationals themself.

Re: Charity
I give the bell ringers a dollar if they don't ring the bell. More if I don't hear it on my out of the store.
I've only given money to one person on a street corner. It was in Tampa,FL several years ago. His sign said---"Why lie?, I need a beer" Him I gave $10 to.

Re: Charity
read in the newspaper that the Salvation Army is experimenting with credit card machines attached to the red kettles. that may be wise idea, less chance of a bell ringer getting mugged.

Re: Charity
I give a bit more than I can really afford, especially during the holiday season, Salvation Army, Toy for Tots, local Food pantry....

OMG!...What will they come up with next! I already hate standing line behind the guy buying a candy bar and a bottled water with his visa card, now I gotta wait in line to donate?! Not to mention the snafu it could create. "Excuse me sir, but apparently your credit card is maxed out. Don't worry though, it all went to a good cause..."

Re: Charity
Yea, they have a few eletronic kettles around. I never seem to have any change when I'm shopping. I would never give to anyone on the street corner. I've seen too many stories where the guy ends up driving a nice Lexus to his $300K house after leaving the street corner.

Re: Charity
kinda like the scene in "Trading Spaces" where Eddie Murphey's character is panhandling, supposedly with no legs, and the cops lift him up off the little cart he's riding in..."I'M CURED!!!"
