Permanant Vacation for Aerosmith?
apparently, Aerosmith and Steven Tyler are going to part ways. Tyler is planning on moving forward with a solo career, but it will DEFINITELY be Steven Tyler style music.
as for the rest of Aerosmith, it's rumored that if they can find a suitable replacement, they will continue on as a band.
one question? HOW does one find a replacement for STEVEN TYLER??? (maybe WN's own FREENSLEAZY should audition for the band!!)
in my opinion, it won't be AEROSMITH without him. the best bet if they choose to look for a new singer would be for them to start fresh, with a different band name entirely.
not many well established bands have had much success with replacement singers...
the exception would be when Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen, and after a few albums, even they lost their edge, and replaced HIM with Gary Cherone (from Extreme)?? and look what THAT album did..it TANKED so bad that it's nearly impossible to find it on any store shelf.

Re: Permanant Vacation for Aerosmith?
Even with changing the band name, there's still that element for failure within the band. The biggest thing working against the band at that point is their original band member bonds conflicting with bonds with the new band member. Lots of inside jokes being missed, creative differences, creative control, the struggle for power. With that many original Aerosmith fans in a band of a new name, the Aerosmith fans will be looking to them to come out with new music that pays homage to the original band.
You also have to recognize their age as a factor as well. With rare exceptions where a single person goes to fame (Steven Tyler for example) their fame will follow them with whatever career move they make. But considering that Steven Tyler was the biggest star in Aerosmith, the other original band members will have a significantly more difficult time restarting their career in comparison. I know each of the other band members are stars in their own way, but when you remove the biggest slice of the cake, the rest of the slices don't look all that appealing...

Re: Permanant Vacation for Aerosmith?
that's very true, Mooant! and remember, this is not the first time that they've gone this route...remember back in the early 80's, when Joe Perry decided to leave to pursue a solo career? (the ill fated Joe Perry Project?) both Aerosmith and the JPP didn't have very much success...and when Aerosmith and Joe sobered up, and reunited, they recorded their biggest album to date (at the time) and continued to record better music and became more popular than ever!

Re: Permanant Vacation for Aerosmith?
From everything I've heard it's somewhat of a mystery as far as Aerosmith and Tyler, After Tyler fell from a stage breaking a collar bone, and also extensive head injuries this Joe Perry being upset due to concert dates being cancelled and such started.
I just read Perry saying:Steven quit as far as I can tell," Perry explained. "I don't know any more than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don't know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don't know."
If it is indeed true, I think it need not be the end of the rest of the group, but the best direction would be the same Queen has talked about, not trying to replace someone un-replaceable.
With them there was talk of Bad Companies former lead singer...totally different and the best way to go I'd say. (If not him, someone radically different) I thought Van Halen with Haggar just didn't fly...
So, if Tyler is indeed quitting hopefully they'd go to a totally non Tyler type singer..Change BIG time...Fleetwood Mac was a blues band, so when "Rumors" came out that was a total about face. Your right, there is no other Tyler as there is no other Freddie Mercury....The guy taking Steve Perry's place in Journey is amazing! BUT.....that still doesn't mean it will work....time will tell.
As much as Tyler is seen as the biggest part of Aerosmith, Joe Perry and the rest of the group are a huge factor to their success. Perry has a unique style and if Tyler had come on the scene with a different band to begin with, many of the biggest songs would have never been, as they were collaberations, in lyrics AND music. Tyler would have gone big no doubt, but AS big??..makes me wonder, no way of knowing I guess. Peter Wolf, without the rest of J. Geils? Makes one wonder how things would have went..as great as many lead singers or guitarists are many only go so far without the rest of the group. They, the "foundation" are often overlooked...The Who without John Entwistle? Not the same!
The front man often overshadows the "foundation" of the band and understandably so, yet without that foundation, the front man often doesn't shine quite so brightly. Just my opinion!

I'm with Mooant, I mean if Tyler wanted a solo career...hon, that train has long left the station.
Any major changes in a major band this late in their career, just means they'll be playing my county fair a few years down the line (with the ad boasting "three (or two)original members!!)

Re: Permanant Vacation for Aerosmith?
Not unlike what happened with Guns'n Roses. Alex Rose is the only original member. EVeryone else went-elsewhere with no coverage by the media. Except for "Slash"

Re: Permanant Vacation for Aerosmith?
Ya know, in my opinion, when you have a band that has reached that level of success, it typically not due to the talent of any "one" person, but rather the chemistry of all the members that catapulted their popularity in the first place. Sure, the front man or woman typically gets the most credit. But how much success did David Lee Roth have when he left VH. He had one album with a bunch of covers and then faded into the sunset. Even a mega star like Mick Jagger who embarked on a solo gig only enjoyed moderate success compared to his work with the Stones. And could anyone imagine Ronnie Van Zant without Skynyrd? That also goes for some of the "#2" men that break away, like the afore mentioned Joe Perry Project. Keith Richards, Ritchie Sambora and Lindsay Buckingham all kinda flopped when they left their bands for solo projects.
Of course, there are exceptions, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were hugely successful after the Beatles, specifically McCartney. Rob Thomas was bigger as a solo act than Matchbox 20 ever was. Jon Bon Jovi's solo album earned him a Grammy and an Emmy. Don Henley had a string of hits in the post Eagles era, as did Stevie Nicks.
As far as replacing front men, could you imagine any Stones songs without Mick singing them? Or Skynyrd songs without Ronnie singing them (No disrespect toward his brother, but he doesn't fill Ronnie's shoes). I don't know what Tyler is thinking, but in my opinion, he doesn't have the charisma nor the current popularity to kick start any kind of successfull solo career. That's just how I roll.

Re: Permanant Vacation for Aerosmith?
I totally agree that its a group effort, just that its hard for a group with such fame to bring in a new person and keep going, its basically starting over from nothing, just with the record companies and public willing to give them a chance. Just one.

Re: Permanant Vacation for Aerosmith?
Totally Agree.....you echo my thoughts...My point was that even though the so called "star" in a band gets the most accolades, and press....people don't realize that the band behind the star is often a much bigger factor then they'd think. Bass players, drummers, guitar, take them away from these huge bands and I'm not saying the bands wouldn't have been successful, what they might have been less, or have taken a totally different path.
Thats why I mentioned John Entwistle, and just a few more, John Paul Jones & John Bonham- Led Zeppelin..Tiran Porter-The Doobie brothers, his bass playing is a HUGE part of their songs, anyone heard of him? For the most part probably not.
Elton John was on top with songs written by Bernie Taupin, THATS when Elton John was huge...when he quit using Taupin songs, his career dropped dramatically, ala "Island Girl?".....ACK! This I find amazing and emphasizing Elton John's and Taupins talents. Most of the biggest hits they collaberated on, Taupin would send the lyrics to Elton John with NO music, sometimes he'd add what he he thought the song might sound like, beat, ballad..etc. But many times he simply sent lyrics, like a poem.. that's it! Then Elton John would magically take these words and put music to them! Totally seperate. Think of the songs, ALL the huge hits... and then try and fathom that concept...It blows me away..I get to ranting and raving, ..Thanks for tolerating me!

Re: Permanant Vacation for Aerosmith?
No matter what happens with Aerosmith, they've brought some great songs to us over so many years. I first was introduced to them by my brother on a 8-track tape. ( Ya know, they should have included books of matches in the box, wedges of some kind.)
I give them SO much credit as they were HUGE, and faltered so badly due to drugs, they all cleaned up only to come back as big if not bigger. They all looked, and sounded sick as hell at one time, upon their return, they looked and sounded great.
I tip my hat to them, many bands have fallen never to return, or be the same. I was probably 12-14 when I first heard them, to think I now have a 13 year old son that loves them is truly amazing...

Per MSN today, Steven Tyler has blasted rumours he has quit Aerosmith - insisting he will continue to sing with the legendary band.
The singer teamed up with Perry on stage in New York on Tuesday night for the guitarist's Joe Perry Project.
He told the crowd, "I just want New York to know that I'm not leaving Aerosmith. The break-up - it just ain't true."

ME EITHER!! I saw them in Jacksonville in the early 90's then built a shrine in their honor, lol. It is also my understanding they've tried it before but Steven and Joe are basically "soulmates" " in a "musical marriage" of sorts. So a split, """ DREAM ON """
