only one #1 hit?
is it possible for some bands to be classified as a One-Hit-Wonder, if they only had ONE song hit number one on the charts?
take for example...the Grateful Dead. they had a lot of popular songs, but it was "Touch of Grey" that hit #1, the ONLY #1 hit for the band.
and amazingly, Led Zeppelin only had ONE number one hit...you'd think it would have been "Stairway to Heaven", right? or "Black Dog", or even "Rock n' Roll". but it's not.
when i heard this on the radio, i couldn't believe it...it was "Whole Lotta Love". (not that it isn't a great song, i just didn't expect it to be the only #1 hit)

Re: only one #1 hit?
Wow, Not sure about bands that had songs that went all the way to number one, but there's tons of bands that had one hit and vanished, though some are STILL touring.
"Coven ~ "One Tin Soldier"..
" Get together "~The Youngbloods...Both of these had their HIT, not saying their touring...but
Procol Harum~ Whiter shade of pale
I grew up in quite a small town, and a few years back the lead singer of that band was performing alone, just him and a piano in this little dive bar. And that was a BIG song.

Anyone remember the dutch group Shocking Blue. Had a no 1 hit in 1963 in the US with the song Venus. Over here it stayed on no 3.

I think in the industry, the definition of a hit is making it on the billboard top 100, which is actually much more difficult than it seems.

Re: only one #1 hit?
I always considered a 1 hit wonder to be an act that never had any real notoriety, got their 15 minutes of fame and then were never heard of again, IE Dixie's Midnight Runners with Come On Eileen. Certainly, The Dead, Zeppelin and Procol Harum dont fit that description. But thats just my opinion.

Re: only one #1 hit?
Well I know you mentioned number one hits, but after reading and thinking about it, going number one isn't really the 'pinnacle' in my opinion as there were many songs that never went to number one, yet sold far more then songs that did! I recall when "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies knocked "Green River" by CCR off the top of the charts, Blasphemy!
And I have had similar conversations with friends over the years about how the Beatles totally wiped out many, many bands in the era when they arrived...they turned the music world upside down.
When I mentioned "One Tin Soldier" I hadn't a clue if it went to number one but I do know it was huge.
I found what I said about Procol Harem, the lead singer playing such small club to be sort of sad, I never played there, and I'm nobody. Yet perhaps the singer was simply doing what he loved...still it is a hole in the wall crappy little bar.

I do recall that song! Had it confused with Franky Avalon's song Venus, lol...
Sadly "Bananarama" did a remake of that song...one word ACK!

Is this a cursed song?

Re: only one #1 hit?
i was just curious to get opinions about whether a band is a one hit wonder if the only had ONE #1 hit. regardless of how many top 40 hits. or let's say a band has 5 singles to hit the top 10, but only one makes it to #1, are they a one hit wonder? my opinion, if they make the top 40, it's a hit, so they aren't one hit wonders.

Re: only one #1 hit?
A song doesnt need to be #1 to be a hit, that just makes it a #1 hit. Anything in the top 40 is a hit, in my opinion. I'd rather have 10 of my songs in the top 40 over just one #1 hit any day.

Dexy's Midnight Runners~
Come On Eileen
I believe this went to number #1 though I'm not positive.
Sheriff~"When I'm with You"
Not positive but I believe when this song became a hit the band had already broken up. Seems it might have been released, didn't do well, then re-released and the second time was huge. By that time they were no more, were asked to regroup and tour but didn't as they weren't exactly... "buddies" anymore.
