Tribute Songs
Yeah, I know, another music thread! Lets talk about your favorite tribute songs. Could be a tribute to anything, people, a specific event, drinking, food, an animal etc. One of my favorites, and its not that well known, is from the Charlie Daniels Band's "Million Mile Reflections" album from the late 70's. The song's name is "Reflections" and is a tribute to Elvis, Janis Joplin and the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd that were killed in the plane crash, specifically, Ronnie Van Zant. If youre not familiar with it, its worth checking out to listen to. I only posted the lyrics because it's so well written (in my opinion) and the words are chilling.
I remember you back in nineteen-fifty-six
You had all the moves and you knew all the tricks
You left all the ladies in a hell of a fix,
When your voice took wing
Then you'd shake around and oh, how you'd sing
Just an old boy from Memphis with a big diamond ring
A country girl's prayer and a city girls dream
Hail the king
Chorus
But its all right now
Keep on singin' loud
Its all right now
Heaven should be proud.
The fifties left town on a crowded dance floor
The sixties came in with a bang and a roar.
The world heard a knock it was Janis at the door
They let her in.
And when it seemed this whole world was falling apart
The houselights would fall and the music would start
She'd be givin us all a little piece of her heart,
Once again.
repeat chorus
It was October in St. Louis town,
When we heard that the Free Bird had fell to the ground
And we all said a prayer before we went down,
To play
And Ronnie, my buddy, above all the rest,
I miss you the most and I loved you the best,
And now that your gone I thank God I was blessed
Just to know you

Re: Tribute Songs
Being one who always loved the visual arts, and have always myself done allot of oils, pastels, watercolors, etc...I'm especially fond of impressionism and that whole art movement, I adore the work of Vincent Van Gogh and found him and his devoted brother Theodore to be an extremely intriguing persons of history...
Don McLean's tribute to Van Gogh is very moving
"Vincent" (Starry Starry Night)
Beautiful Melody, beautiful tune, but the lyrics are what I find to be just a splendid description of the man and his work.

Re: Tribute Songs
This is a different spin, rather than just a tribute to a specific person, this one was for a cause.

Re: Tribute Songs
Lowlands posted this song in a different thread, but it works here too...
David Bowie's Space Oddity (ground control to Major Tom), Peter Schilling's Major Tom (I'm Coming Home) & K.I.A.'s Mrs. Major Tom all pay tribute to the Major Tom, the fictional astronaut in the Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It is speculated that either Kris Kristofferson, Warren Beatty, Cat Stevens or Mick Jagger "inspired" the famous song "You're so Vain" by Carly Simon
