calling all computer geeks, nerds, and techies!!!
this is a two part question...
i have an older Dell desktop, running on Windows 2000 pro edition.
lately, i've been having issues with getting a "low memory" warning, or "a script on this page has been stopped due to low memory".
i have scanned for viruses and spyware on a regular basis, almost daily, as of late.
my main question here, is i have had some programs that i did not like, and have gone into "add/remove programs" to remove them. i am wondering if i need to keep all installed updates...for example do i really need to keep Java 6 update 13, Java 6 update 3, Java 6 update 5 etc...or can get rid of all but the current?
i don't really have the funds available right now to buy a new computer, or to buy any new software to help.
i would appreciate any feedback. and any advice on how to solve my memory issues. REMEMBER though, if there's a website you think i should see, send it to me via pm, and don't post it here....

Re: calling all computer geeks, nerds, and techies!!!
I use CCleaner to clean my hard disk but also my memory, its free and keep my memory clean. There's also a part to repair things. And its for free, with upgrades.

Have you increased your Virtual memory to resolve the "low memory" issue?

Re: calling all computer geeks, nerds, and techies!!!
I usually just do a re-format (for nagging bigger problems)
and then just re-install only the programs I know I really want and use.

Re: calling all computer geeks, nerds, and techies!!!
Your problem may be related to not enough hard disk space. Check how much space you have left on your hard drive.
Think of RAM as like a table in a library and your hard drive as the bookshelves. When you open a program, the book is put on the table (RAM) and opened. This takes up more space (I'm using an allusion here- so it's not totally accurate). But, that lets you actually use the program. When you have many books open, the desk starts to get a little cluttered. So, Windows uses a 'paging' system; it reserves part of the hard drive to store information from RAM that hasn't been touched in a while. That way, the program is kept up and you have more RAM to use.
It may be, though, that you have so much stuff on your hard drive that a paging file cannot be created big enough to act as that "extra RAM" called virtual RAM. If this is the case, you may think about deleting files you do not need or else compressing them.

I had a similar problem not too long ago. yes, increase the virtual memory. This alone won't fix it.
I made a post about this and am going to find it.

Re: calling all computer geeks, nerds, and techies!!!
Ok, after spending numerous minutes going thru every post me and my former self made, I realized this is what i did.
If you go to internet options, click on the advanced tab. When that appears, you'll see toward the bottom a box to reset explorer to original settings. That helped my XP very much.
Hope that helps. It should be noted that it doesn't work all the time just because your puter slows.

I couldn't remember where it was. I went thru all of my posts and those of my former self. Never did find it. I thought it was in advice or support.

Re: calling all computer geeks, nerds, and techies!!!
Sounds like you have to much on your computer that makes it run very slow, ever tried broadband, it'll speed up your computer no matter whatever you may have on it, check the web for broadband companies and that'll definately speed things up cause I have it and it's great!!
