Forgotten favorite past times
What are some of your past times you enjoy that you haven't done in a long time? Do you have a list of things you've never done and would love to try one day?
A few I haven't done in a very long time are going to a museum, seeing a concert, doing some paintings.

Re: Forgotten favorite past times
Looking for my roots, i used to spend time with genealogy. These days it seems most of my solo time i spend watching and reading on WN.
Laying around on the beach seems a long time ago too.

Re: Forgotten favorite past times
One my favorite things to do and haven't in years is to grab as many fellow musical friends, non egotistical musicians, set up in a garage or house etc. And play anything you want...When we did someone might say "Hey do you know, Hotel California?", and the answer was something like "Well I'm sure I know it good enough for around here!"..and off we'd go! It wasn't about money, it was about music and fun....if it was horrible, so what. If you could play the spoons, or your nose Jump on in! Often we'd run a reel to reel tape recorder and get it all on tape..sometimes 10 hours straight or more, and we'd later listen to it. As much as some of the music was funny, some not bad for winging it, there were SO many funny things said that you'd normally have missed that were funny caught on tape. We did that at least annually and jam until the police arrived from a complaint....and they showed up every single time! We always knew they would....

I gotta agree elf, those can be the most fun and SO much more enjoyable than working on polishing a setlist. And its always cool too when youve got a bunch of friends around listening because they enjoy that more than a show. I played a show at a benefit in August with a make shift band and the only guy I had played with before was the bass player. In all, there were 5 of us playing who had literally just met an hour before we started to play and went on to do a 4 hour show in front of a crowd of about 200. When we were on stage, I must have said (dont remember) that we hadnt played together before, because when I walked through the crowd on a break, people kept saying that they couldnt believe that we werent "a band". We had more laughs that night than any time I can remember. Sorry if I went a bit off topic.

Re: Forgotten favorite past times
Ah, I remember back in my "band chick" days (never liked that term..."band chick"...but when you're boyfriend was in a band, that's what they called you)
They'd all come out to our place, way out in the country to practice or just jam...I always had freshed picked wild mushrooms of all varieties cuz I loved to hike in the woods, and I had my own chickens too...so...when night starting turning into morning, I'd fire up the cast iron skillets and start making huge omelets of fresh eggs and wild mushrooms, with hash browns and the works...

Re: Forgotten favorite past times
i'm no musician, ny any means (although i've tried learning, and like to sing...just not very good!), but i love going to see live bands, my highschool buddy's band just played a show on Halloween, and they rocked, it was only the fourth time they've played together....the singer went out in the crowd for audience participation, and this one girl sang REALLY well, he was so impressed that he had a hard time finishing the song.
my buddy is an AWESOME guitar player. at my 20th class reunion in 2008, the band that played featured a different friend from my class on drums...his bend has been around for 19 years, and they're awesome too, but for the second set of THAT show, Shawn (the guitar player), and Scott (the drummer) had a jam session with two other classmates sitting in on Bass and rhythm guitar. now THAT was fun, they rocked. they talked about doing a mini tour together, and i hope they do! the called themselves N.F.L.(Not For Long) they wanted me to sing with them, but unfortunately i was suffering from a case of bronchitis at the time (good thing, too i am a bad singer! )
since this is a favorite forgotten pastime, i should say that i REALLY miss going out to the bar every Saturday night and catching the live bands...i can't afford it, i'm usually working Saturday nights now (or have my kids), and the bar here stopped having bands every weekend.

I believe some of the girl's terms for me was groupie. And, I guess my term for them would be jealous. I told one of the band guys this once and he said, " We are your groupie, we come to see you."
However, a good meal is high on the list of what these guys appreciate. Sometimes poor and almost homeless, I use to have one or several groups over for dinner or during festival weekend, a 3 day feeding. Everything. Sex is great but they certainly don't forget you when you feed them.

Re: Forgotten favorite past times
Every response to this was SO great...It isn't about being good, it's about the kinship, and that went for friends that might not play but enjoyed being there every bit as much as those that played. Anyone with an ego wasn't there, ever. I played to please others as best I could for a Long time... so to play for total fun would take me back to why I began playing and singing to begin with. The love of music.
I was so lucky to get to meet a few well known stars by being in the warm up band at fairs and such, talk to the band members, yet still doing the garage band thing rates higher. I play acoustic guitar, fingerpicking style, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot etc..but played bass during the time I played gigs...Never a great singer, decent at best, same for bass. I must say I've gotten to either work with or at least jam with some players that were phenomenal, so great sometimes I wondered what in the heck am I doing playing with these people? Why don't they ask me to leave? lol....No groupies or band chicks..some great female friends though and too many great stories to tell. Feeding the band after a gig, or anytime was very much appreciated especially when on the road! Such a gesture was never taken lightly by me after eating in so many resteraunts..
NO one went off topic, I loved every response as each one describes exactly why it was such fun...Yes I had run in's and scuffles with many buttheads as well, but the great people I met made up for any black eyes or bloody noses.
When I said if you could play your nose, didn't have to be good, I meant it. If anyone ridiculed another during these all for fun jams, they were escorted out right away.
I know I got to babbling there but I can't adequately convey how much these times meant to me, there will be more, and I can't wait. Thank you good people!

Re: Forgotten favorite past times
I don't I was in the "groupie" category, Iwant2kssuallovr...it just so happened that one guy I loved dearly, and was with a very long time, was a musician. He was the only musician I ever dated, but allot of the band chicks I had the pleasure of being close friends with did prefer and only dated musicians. (Some even narrowed it down to "only drummers, etc..."
They were all good people.
All those road trips to out of town gigs, band practices, and general crazy shit. Some fun times !

Yes, I agree, and I don't think I was in the "Groupie" catergory. I just loved music and dancing. We were all friends and respected each other, had each others back.

I'd like to learn how to play the guitar, I've tried in the past, and felt my fingers couldn't reach the chords properly.

Re: Forgotten favorite past times
Yeah, Iwant2kssuallovr..sounds like we're talking about the same thing...which is referred to as a band chick around my area...which is a female who happens to be with a musician.
A groupie, would only target musicians, and us band chicks, like you said, had each others backs there in regards to annoying clingy drunk "groupies" hanging around
I mean, no conflict or problem...just part of it...telling drunk groupies...to "idle down there missy, that's my friend's husband/man...now the keyboard doode, he's single!" Stuff like that.
Ah ya know...

You can learn, trust me on that, the last band I was with we had a female keyboard player and guitarist, she had easily the littlest fingers I've ever seen, I mean her hands were tiny! The whole band had been friends all through school, which was great. We all were within a year of each other..the first time I saw her hands, I didn't think guitar I just said "wow" or something very intelligent like that.
Got my new guitar today, I think I am giddy....

Oh I got a PAUL REED SMITH PRS SE CUSTOM 22 STOPTAIL,(stoptail simply means solid bridge, no whammy bar ) which will stand tall or above most of what Gibson or Fender is selling now, yet cost far less. One of the lesser known companies, I read some reviews on it before I bought it. Out of 134 reviews there were only two below 5 stars. All I can say is, I DUN GOOD! Thanks for asking!
