Did The Beatles Sell Out?
I saw, what in my opinion, was one of the most ridiculous news pieces last week that was prompted by the new Rock Star game featuring the Beatles. Reporters were on the street in London asking people if they felt that the Beatles had sold out by allowing this to happen. And to my surprise, they all said yes! PLEASE! Their music is not only timeless and incredible, but it was one of the most important things to have happened not only in the 60's but also in the history of all music. Why else would this even be a relevant topic almost 40 years after they split up?
And I'm not a fan of Rock Star or rival Guitar Hero, but I think it also gives a new generation an opportunity to hear and learn their music.
It's also been talked about that their music was finally going to be available on other mediums like itunes and everybody is saying that that is a sell out too. Again, PLEASE! That would have been the same as saying that their songs would only be available on vinyl and couldnt be recorded on compact disc! I just dont get it.
And as far as selling out is concerned, do they REALLY think that Paul and Ringo really NEED any more money? People have the right to buy, or not to buy what they want. And when it comes to anything "Beatle", people will buy it.

Re: Did The Beatles Sell Out?
I'm in agreement with you! I would just hate to see this generation and on grow up not even knowing who the beatles were (are).
I think it shows practical and progressive thinking. Keeping thier music alive for decades and generations to come is a good thing.

Thanks Chazzy, and thanks for your opinions above too. I know I probably get more incensed about things like this than most people, so it'll be interesting to see who else has anything to say about it.

Re: Did The Beatles Sell Out?
The sellouts are todays "stars" that only make "music" for the masses to sell as much as possible. Where are the songs from the heart, about things that matter?

The TV comercial did something weird with John Lennon. Other than that, I am fine with it. Plenty of parents will always raise their kids on the Beatles music. I remember singing their songs in grade school, music class.

Re: Did The Beatles Sell Out?
the way i see it, for a band to sell out, they need to endorse a product that they normally would not use, just to make a buck. a lot of people felt that way about Metallica after they released the black album. people claimed that they "sold out" because adapted their musical style to "fit in" with the sound that was getting radio airplay at the time. i think it was brilliant, to reinvent the band to gain new fans.

Re: Did The Beatles Sell Out?
a. the Beatles are no more. Only two members left, and they haven't colaborated on anything since 83.
b. Micheal Jackson owned and sold the rights to use the songs for, "Rock Star" before Paul McCarthy could stop it. (contracts)
I don't think you'll be seeing anymore songs getting out since he bought the rights back from Jackson when he was alive and need the dough...
