? for you techno geeks.
OK, I bought a new lap top that is Wi-Fi ready. When traveling, I would like to get on the internet. Now for my question. Being the doubting parent that I am, my son is thinking that if you would go and buy a Wi-Fi card for around $40, one time cost, that you go anywhere and get internet access. I'm thinking that if I would go to a hotel that offers internet access, I would have to bring my modem, and set up my computer with my IP stuff before I could into the internet. Now if you have understood both questions, I would appreciate some input.

If the lap top has a Wi-Fi card built in then no you don't have to buy any thing to use it where there Wi-fi. But if it dose not have it built in the you need to get a card.

If the hotel offers internet as Wi-Fi then no you don't have to have a modem you can use your laptop Wi-Fi to get on.

Re: ? for you techno geeks.
Get one with wi-fi built in and your good to go. Anywhere with a public hot spot like many libraries and restaurants you'll be able to log on to the net.
There are cards that even allow you to get on-line via your cell provider but those do cost extra every month. Don't know much about the policies $, but they do work everyplace a cell is available. Check out the new Netbooks if you want small affordable unit mainly for Internet use.

The wireless card helps with the reception of the hotels wi-fi. It does not automatically connect to everything.
The only thing you should have to take is your wireless card should you buy one.
I use Verizon wireless for everything now. Got sick of the cables and extra bs all over.
