Re: The muse (The story behind the music)
Sheryl Crowe wrote "My Favorite Mistake" after she had a romantic encounter with Eric Clapton.
rumor has it that Alaniss Morissette wrote "You Oughta Know" after her break up with Dave Couiler (Joey from tv's Full House)
originally titled "Beck" after Peter Criss's girlfriend, the band decided to change it to "Beth" because they felt that fans would think it was about Jeff Beck.
Night Ranger had a huge hit with "Sister Christian" written for Jack Blade's sister Chris. they changed it upon hearing the chorus "sister Chris ya know the time has come", it sounded more like "sister Christian, oh the time has come"

Re: The muse (The story behind the music)
Eric Clapton's five-year-old son, Conor, plummeted to his death in 1991 from the 53rd floor of the New York City apartment.
Conor's death pushed Mr. Clapton into depression. From it emerged Tears in Heaven, Mr. Clapton's most successful song.
"Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?" he asked in the tender ballad to his dead son. "Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?"

Paul McCartney wrote Hey Jude about John Lennon's son Julian who was having a hard time with his father's divorce from Cynthia and also the introduction of Yoko Ono.
And in Let It Be, the "Mother Mary" he sings about is not the mother of God, but rather his own mother, Mary.

Re: The muse (The story behind the music)
It's too heartbreaking to even listen to Clapton's "Tears in Heaven".....just one of the saddest songs ever.
Don Mclean's "American Pie"....supposedly inspired by Mclean's own memories of the death of Buddy Holly, but there's a whole lot in that long ole song that's been disected and debated for decades now...

Re: The muse (The story behind the music)
The one I remember most I think, is Grand Funk Railroad (?)
"We're an American Band"...the verse about "sweet sweet Connie, did her act..." was about an actual groupie, Debbie somethinglastname....who later made the talk show circuit with her tell all book about all the rock stars she boinked...
Ummmm...I'm a little fuzzy on the story, maybe someone recalls it in better detail?
(Not much google time for me right now...)

That would actually be Connie Hamzy. She was one of the women mentioned in an episode of Behind the Music back in the late 90's that was totally devoted to telling groupies' stories. Perhaps the most famous of groupies though was Pamela DesBarres. I dont think there was ever a song written about her, but what a friggin story she tells!

Ah, so her name really was Connie! It's been so long since I've heard the story that the song verse was about a real groupie...she was really proud of that whole being a groupie thing....didn't read her book though...

Yeah, theres a whole thing about her and Bill Clinton too. She's some kinda legend in Little Rock. From things Ive read about her, she would suck off anybody that was in front of her. And to look at her, you can tell, she has a LOT of miles on her. If ya go on youtube, you can find Pamela DesBarres reading from her book "Let's Spend The Night Together"
I know this is a bit off topic, but its Chazzy's thread.

You know, I've been thinking about this. Given the tragic nature of its origin maybe it helped Mr. Clapton to heal a bit. It is a beautiful song and I, like many, have lost a love one at a young age. I'm sure it has touched countless people. A little weeping now and then never hurt anyone.
