Harley vs Japanese, Italian whatever brand.
Read a few threads concerning motorcycles and everywhere i read about people who are crazy about Harley's. I drive a jap, a Suzuki and i like to know: What's so special about an Harley . You already pay much more because of the name. Is it a lifestyle or does the motor run better. Never rode one so I'm a Harley virgin.

Re: Harley vs Japanese, Italian whatever brand.
Warren had Indians when he was a teen and a coupe of Honda Ascots while he was in the Air Force. He always says that the Harley's we have had (07 sportster, wrecked; and an 09 Night Train, current) just ride and handle better. We also like sound. They say loud pipes save lives. Don't know if it's true or not (didn't help when we had our wreck last year), but we like the ride and the community. We find friends where ever we go. Some stay friends and some just pass on through, but there's always something to talk about. Out on the road, I have seen more Harley riders stop to help another rider than I have ever seen of those who ride "crotch rockets" or other non-Harley models.
In the motorcycle community, ours, at least, we don't care what you ride, just don't run our ride down and have respect enough to agree to disagree. We have friends who ride Honda's, Harley's, Buells, Kawasaki's and even a Victory that got turned into a trike.
Old bikes, new bikes, custom, pieced together, whatever you ride, it's how you ride not what you ride that's the important.

I agree with you, its how you ride, not what you ride. I have friends driving cars lol. Over here motor riders greet eachother, i think about 90%, when they pass eachother. So that makes a group. Riding an Harley making a smaller group makes sense.

We do that too, Erja. Put a hand out as we pass each other. Me, personally, when I do drive our truck (I don't ride my own motorcycle), I sometimes find myself doing it then, as well, lol. And I will also get behind someone on a motorcycle to keep them from being tailgated by someone else. Especially at a traffic light. I despise it when someone pulls up too close to us at a light, and I'm a little more paranoid about drivers than i used to be.

Re: Harley vs Japanese, Italian whatever brand.
I had always thought that the Harley Brand name gained much of it's selling power not only by the quality of it's product, but during a very powerful time in our country when "Buying American" was the only real choice (by popular opinion) Riding, driving, or buying anything imported was kinda frowned on. It was a time when our factories and industries were suffering due to cheaper imports, job loss, lay offs, and factory closings were affecting Americans and our economy so very strongly. It became "political". At one time, anyone driving or riding an imported car or motorcycle, could expect at the least some angry looks or shouts from the public. T-shirts and bumper stickers proclaimed this opinion in varied sayings and mottos.
I think that some of that became residual with us, to this day. Some Americans still only buy American made.

I've always rode "rice grinders" myself. I had many friends that had to work on their hogs for several hours before they could ride. With my Honda, it was always ready to ride. But that was several years ago when Harley was part of AMC. The quality was not there at that point. Not sure about now. I could never afford a hog anyway.

Re: Harley vs Japanese, Italian whatever brand.
my first bike was a Honda elsinore 250 dirt bike, ( damn i wish i had that bike now, they are worth BIG BUCKS now) then i bought a used 77 harley wide glide, then i sold that bought a 81 harley, after i got it fixed like i wanted, i saw this 89, just had to have it, so sold the 81, bought the 89 harley, put a springer front end on it, had a friend do a custom paint job,, put a better seat on it, & i've rode it to hell & back, shes startin to show the miles, might be time to retire the ole girl next year. but ive had a blast on it, gone to bike rallies, taken trips, or just a ride on a weekend. Ive met friends, once i got caught in a rainstorm u cant believe, it even shredded my raincoat, some really nice ppl in a camper, pulled up next to me & ask if i wanted a dry camper to sit in while the storm blew over, a pleasant suprise,

Re: Harley vs Japanese, Italian whatever brand.
A Harley, custom painted does look nice, with all the chrome, But they are too expensive for me. I'm also not much of a cleaner for that chrome. I ride my bike all year around and only clean it once or twice a year. I wont be a good boss.

Yep, a lable or claim of "Made in the USA" doesn't mean anything much anymore....could just mean assembled in the US with all imported parts.

I have always like HD's. Partly cause it American heritage but to me the big HDs Like the Road King are what a Motorcycle should look like. That said I really am into the customs from West Coast Choppers and old school builders like Chopper Larry (RIP).

Re: Harley vs Japanese, Italian whatever brand.
seems like we got away from" buy American " and American jobs...lot of folks wanted things cheaper and things became disposable, now we got cash for junkers
but i have a Harley and rather ride that ,also have a Yamaha and a kow and a BSA and if i cant ride the Harley then i rather ride the BSA

Re: Harley vs Japanese, Italian whatever brand.
I was thinking of Indian Larry too, but I think there is also a Chopper Larry, and a Chopper Dave, and I'm sure that list goes on with those that have taken "Chopper" as part of their name. None come close to the Indian Larry legend of course.
