Your Childhood home
What was yours like? I remember very early on, allot of moving and rentals until my parents finally could afford to buy their first home for us, and it was large, very old and definitely a "handyman's special"
I remember growing up, the odd smells, like musty rot during times Dad was doing the demo work, and then smells of fresh sawdust and wet paint and varnish when he was putting it all back together. Dad loved the Colonial motif too and kinda over did it everywhere in the house, even the toilet seat had an eagle on it, everywhere was the Liberty Bell or American eagle, upholstery, wall paper, everywhere!
Us kids, loved exploring the large attic and loose floor boards, the outbuildings....always something of the past left to find.

Re: Your Childhood home
Small fishing village at the Belgian coast. Everyone knows everyone. Church every sunday twice and if you didn't show up people looked at you like you did something real bad. My father coming home on friday night, been gone all week, falling asleep when he sat down. My mon working hard to keep us all clean and dressed. A lot of fun with my brothers and sisters. Saterdays we had to help dad fixing the nets , sometimes do some painting. A great time

Re: Your Childhood home
When I was little we had a nice house with a huge backyard. We had so much fun, but it was hard to fit in as a minority. When we moved to Detroit, it seemed like my life got busier. I liked the constant action in Detroit, always something to do and our street still had that home time feeling. We would just go outside to the street, find friends and hang out. No cell phones, no pagers. Just come in when the street lights come on.

Re: Your Childhood home
We had a lot of moving around...my dad and mom were a little un-stable! ( actually...mostly my dad. )
I did recently talk to an ex-g.f. though, that went by my grandmothers home, where I spent most of my later childhood, and teen years, and we had a long discussion on how the new owners screwed it all up! lol...( by screwed it up, I of course mean, remodeled it! )
But, all OUR memories were tossed in the dumpster....
Just in our heads now...its amazing, too, how much changes, so fast, and then you really realize how short life is...

Re: Your Childhood home
We had a small Florida home in Miami. Old green carpet where I suffered my first black eye. A front door where I always slammed my fingers. Three bedrooms, one bath.

My father had a great room built on adjoining the kitchen. I remember a sheet hanging where the wall was torn down and looking at the moon.

A great room was built, and as I was young, could not give you measurements. There were four steps down that were unfinished and very jagged. We could of killed ourselves on those steps.

In Florida, we had a fireplace that sat in the middle of the room and we use to ride our bikes around it. I think I remember rafters. One day, my father brought home a injured dove in a monkey cage. I remember the bird flying all around.

As it turns out, the room was built by a man that owed my dad money and it was totally illegal. Supposedly there were never any permits and it would not have passed any code inspections... HA HA... I just love my dad.

Re: Your Childhood home
we lived in a old house, poorly built, on some land my dad rented from 2 very nice ladies. But my earliest memories of that old house was mom putting pans all over when it rained cuz the roof leaked bad, i remember hearing mice in the walls. Every winter when we couldnt farm,, dad would either remodel or add on a room, eventually the leaks & mice went away. the house was torn down along with 9 others along hiway 283 when they moved the hiway over to straighten out some of the curves.

Re: Your Childhood home
What i like to tell the young ones, and ofcourse our parents had less than us, that we had no TV, telephone, computer, shower, car etc.... Always like the expression of unbeliece. They don't think there is life without these things, and i think we believe the same these days.

Re: Your Childhood home
I gotta say I really enjoyed reading Iwant2kssuallovr post here and I am nearly tempted to ask about how ya'all came about having a monkey cage in hopes you might even have more stories to tell.

Re: Your Childhood home
I was born in the midwest, the second of 5 when I was 2 we moved to daytona, my dad was a teacher and he did not like the school system there so back to the midwest we rented a small house. When I was we bought a big house not to far from where we lived by this time there was 5 of us and three sister were is one bedroom and my brother and me were in a room.
This house was a very big 2 story house and one day before we actually moved I took my oldest sister to the new house to show her. I was 5 and she was 4 I remember picking her up so she could see in a window. This house was where I spent the rest of my childhood and we just sold it a couple of years ago after my dad passed away. Even though I go to that town that's not too far from where I line now I have never went by our house. I guess its because it belongs to someone else and I don't want to see what they have done to it.
