Contractors
I don't have much experience with contractors and construction companies, most home improvements so far were of a smaller scale and DIY projects.
Had a house sided once, it turned out nice after a few call backs to make it right, I suppose that happens.
I just came in from having coffee outside, and I'm wondering what happened to the masonry guy? We've been working and planning this chimney rebuild for months, getting the estimates and all that, and I know why he didn't show up last week (rain) but I'm thinking back on this experience so far and it's always the hubs that has to call him. He seems to need some prodding to call back or give us a set time to do the work, and the work hasn't even started yet. I'm wondering if this one little job isn't going to be a huge headache? I'd feel better if the guy was a bit more diligent about his communications.
So...what I'm really wondering is...is our contractor being a little bitch, or is this just the way things go in the construction world? I dunno....I'm pretty sure the hubs will be tracking him down by phone on his next day off.

Re: Contractors
That is about par for the course with some contractors. Some I have dealt with are right on it but others are as you describe.

Re: Contractors
I've never dealt with contractors, always done things myself, including building my own house. It seems the way things are going with the construction industry right now,you would have people pleading to let them do the work, and do it right and on time.
Around here they are still building houses like crazy, and college housing is going mad, even though they already have more than enough. The students always have to live in the newest fanciest apts, so after 3 or 4 years the place is only renting at half capacity. What a waste.
I have had a rental property for sale 4 years now,no buyers, but construction still goes on

Re: Contractors
Good ones usually have four or five jobs lined up. Weather seems to screw up the work and he probably is commited to do the other jobs ahead of yours. Masons especially, will do one job one day, then blow you off for a week. They claim the motar needs time to set, but they're usually out doing another job or back work from someone else.

Re: Contractors
I have had good experiences with contractors and many shitty ones!! I've had them call me the morning of their scheduled arrival day and tell me a bigger budgeted job came up so they said they would not be available to do the job at all! I've had a carpet installer finish 75% of an installation and then he gets a phone call from his wife to come home immediately and never to return, leaving me to find an installer that would finish the uncompleted install. That was fun!!

Re: Contractors
We're calling in another contractor, it bothers me to no end that this one claims he didn't call us (when we call him)because he doesn't have our phone number and I just have to wonder what kind of business person doesn't keep some record of their customer's phone numbers, ya know?

Re: Contractors
drop a few hints that you will be laying out in the sun in a very skimpy bikini, and I bet he will show up every day. Of course he wouldn't get much work done for watching, but he would be there
