Tackle Box
I haven't been fishing in years, I miss it!
It's not so much that I love to catch fish, or even catch fish for dinner...I just love the day spent on the lake, on the dock, at the river's edge.
Somethin' about being near water, being near the sound of water that relaxes and releases the mind.
I use to go fishing, after a bit, get sidetracked, start just trying out all the lures in the tackle box for funsies, then putting the pole down and start wandering and meandering off to check out the flora and fauna, or to just lean back with my toes dangling in the water.

Re: Tackle Box
i ain't been fishin' in nearly 10 years, but i plan on going this year. i've been having a little more free time lately. i thought about goin' last year, but with the cost of bait, the cost of gas, and everything else, it was too damn expensive.

the last time i went, i found a little spot, and every time my bobber hit the water, i had a hit. i caught a ton of perch! sure, none of them were big enough to keep (most of them were not much bigger than a sucker minnow) but it sure was fun to catch that many fish, that quickly!

Re: Tackle Box
I like the river, a nice gravel sandy shore line, the sound the water makes running through the shallows, the cold deep spots for cooling off in.

It's been so long since I've spent a day out fishing...

Re: Tackle Box
don't really know about Wisconsin, but in Mn, if you don't clean the weeds from your entire boat, and the DNR catches you, there are some pretty hefty fines. there are a lot of invasive weeds that take over the lakes, and end up cutting the oxygen supply down and killing the fish supply.

Re: Tackle Box
its called vhs
What is VHS?
Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) is a deadly fish virus and an invasive species that is threatening Wisconsin's fish. VHS was diagnosed for the first time ever in the Great Lakes as the cause of large fish kills in lakes Huron, St. Clair, Erie, Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River in 2005 and 2006. Thousands of muskies, walleye, lake whitefish, freshwater drum, yellow perch, gizzard shad, redhorse and round gobies died. Many Chinook salmon, white bass, emerald shiners, smallmouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, burbot, and northern pike were diseased but did not die in large numbers.

It's not a threat to people who handle infected fish or want to eat their catch, but it is threat to the more than 25 fish species [PDF 12KB] it can kill. This is the first time a virus has affected so many different fish species from so many fish families in the Great Lakes. VHS virus is considered an invasive species (not native to the Great Lakes), but scientists are not sure how the virus arrived. It may have come in with migrating fish from the Atlantic Coast, or may have hitch-hiked in ballast water from ships.

they have more on it on the wi dnr website

Re: Tackle Box
Well that sounds wicked! Haven't heard or read anything like that happening around here.
You got a few fish there that I'm not familiar with like burbot.
Mostly around here it's crappie, bass, bluegill and during the very early morning and night it's catfish.

Re: Tackle Box
i used to catch a LOT of bullheads. i hate those things, they are no good unless you load em up with tons of beer batter (the more beer the batter... )

one of my fondest memories of fishing in my younger days is the time that my sister's ex husband asked me to go out fishing with him, i said yes, reluctantly, 'cuz the last few times we went, every one else was catching their limits of crappies and sunfish, but all i caught was bullheads. he said "Trust me, i found a nice spot, and i can guarantee there's no bullheads". the very first fish that HE caught?

you guessed it, a huge bullhead! (but i caught a decent sized bass!)

Re: Tackle Box
Is a bullhead a catfish?
Gars are some ugly fish I tell ya.

What most people call "noodling" is called "hogging" around here, no matter what ya call it...not a good practice really from a conservation standpoint.

Re: Tackle Box
bullheads look a lot like catfish, but i don't think catfish have stingers, and bullheads don't get that big i think, the biggest one i've caught was maybe three pounds.

KinkyintheFalls would probably know for sure if they are catfish....

Re: Tackle Box
Oh you're right! Yes he would know! I know catfish have "whiskers" that can sting a bit, so maybe the same thing? I know they sure have a mouthful of teeth.

Around here, people love their catfish. Crawdaddies too.

Re: Tackle Box
Last time I went fishing was over 30 yrs ago, back in the Midwest, Illinois to be exact. Missed the bluegill, crappie, large mouth, and catfish.

The only fishing I do nowadays is at the fish market, sometimes it's hard to catch fish there...can be pretty expensive.

Re: Tackle Box
Large mouth is fun fishin'....

I did look up catfish/bullhead...just read a little on one page so I guess bullhead is a type of catfish and the stingers are on the fins...never did much catfishing, have done a little though, at night with a bobber...ya never knew if it was a catfish nibble or turtle nibble until ya tried to hook it and reel it in.

Re: Tackle Box
i seen them doing that on a few lakes , might be natives and ya need a permit,we were camping on trout lake once and out in my croppie killer and seen a bunch of jugs ,dont know if they were for trout or muskies or what them there clear water lakes arre hard to fish. were use to fish for blue cats....looked like overe size bullheads about 3 feet long, we use chicken liver for bait and a big ole net and the meat was white as snow....

Re: Tackle Box
Chicken livers is the preferred bait here for catfishing, some make their own baitballs out of gawd knows what, some real stinky stuff...the liver seems to hang on the hook better than allot of the homemade or store bought bait balls.
They say there are a whole lot of different types of catfish, not sure what we use to catch around here, they were dark, almost black, some got to be of a huge size too.

Re: Tackle Box
they fish for cats here too, in the Minnesota River, it runs through my back yard, nearly. i don't like river fishing. but my nephew caught a 33lb cat a few years ago, took the poor kid damn near 45 minutes to reel that sucker in, and he almost got pulled in the river, too!

Re: Tackle Box
I am lucky to live on the river. It is very relaxing. The carp are fun to catch, but not good eating. I love my wave runner. I will have to get a picture of me on it and put it on my profile. It is a wonderful way to feel free ....

Re: Tackle Box
Wow, sounds good to me, the rivers nearest me aren't deep enough for that kind of thing, they're mostly clear shallow rivers....good for fishing, camping, canoeing and stuff...not like the bigger muddies like the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

the best way to eat a carp (the ONLY way, in my opinion) is smoked! dad used to work on a grain barge back in the 70's, the carp were so used to eating the corn that would spill over, that they would drop one kernel in the water, and almost immediately there would be a school of 50 to 100 carp on the surface of the river, the guys would take their rifles and shoot them, until the DNR informed them that it's a NO NO to do that!
