Re: Austria
Hi Chazzy,An old lady passed away that lived up the street from me and she was from there and I don't know if she has family there or not.She competed in the 1938 European Woman's Track and Field Championships in Vienna,Austria according to a newspaper article I read.I'd just like to know how a person might find someone from her family. Her body cremated and before she died she told another neighbor that when she died she wanted to go back home to be laid to rest,I don't know exactly what part she was from and I don't know how to find out that won't cost me a bunch of money so any help would be great! I don't know if I can put her name on here or not to see if anyone knows her or her family.

Re: Austria
Is there an obituary for her? That would make geneology searching a bit easier.
Don't know how much help I can be, but send me any info and I'll give it a shot over the weekend while I'm online.

Re: Austria
It's a wonderful thing he's doing, and I hope we can help him out with this.
I sent an email to the Austian Embassy in DC this morning, don't know what our chances are to hear back from them.
Anyone else have any ideas?

Re: Austria
I've been checking some google links for him, wiki had allot of info on the atheletes of 1938, but not on this women dammit.....I'll try your key word search lib.
I'm trying to follow some of the European Athetetic links too...
Hmmmm....I think she may have been Swiss??? This tag follows her name (SUI) The name Studly gave me is certainly a German name, but the (SUI) tag follows her name on the stats? Anyone help me there?
(Hey, I'm not a sportys person)

Re: Austria
Well, sent out another email to a sports records site, they do have her listed as fourth in the Javelin Final, so maybe they have more information on her.
It's the weekend, I'll just send out emails now and hope for some productive replies later.
I am a little confused, I know 1938 was a very unsettling turbelent time, but just confused about the (SUI)tag on her name, and the fact that she was Austrian? Straighten me out, I don't mind looking like an idiot if I can learn something from it!

Re: Austria
The newspaper I looked at on line from Keyser,WV headline said -- A long journey--- Switzerland native competes in Senior Olympics.I contacted the man that wrote it and he sent some info that I'll check out later.I try to help out when I can so I've been busy helping out a friend of mine that her and her mother's house burnt to the ground May 24th,her mom is in the burn center in Pa.and now doing okay and she's staying with me (and sleeping on my couch because I don't have an extra bed since my son moved out)so I don't get much time to do much on here. Thanks to all of you and a special thanks to Chazzy

Re: Austria
Well we've got something to go on then! I was thinking about maybe contacting a media source in her homeland ...just wasn't sure exactly where her homeland was....so I'll check the Switzerland Embassy webpage, they should have a long list of all sorts of contacts there, media, etc....
Someone should take an interest in her I'm sure, she's a part of her country's history. It's just a matter of finding and contacting the right person, even if it means contacting a hundred to find that one right person.

Re: Austria
I sure hope sure, she had quite a life and deserves a place in her country's history. I did write to a few Swiss/American Historical organizations too, so hopefully at least someone will be interested in preserving her photos of the 1938 event, I'll holler when and if I hear back from anyone else.
It would be even better if her family could be found of course.

Re: Austria
If its a German name, maybe you can ad the name of east germany to it on a google search, so name of the woman and DDR. Give it a shot, if its a german sounding name.

Re: Austria
I'm anxious to hear if this story has an ending, that would be exciting.
rweezerman, her name is German, she is a native of Switzerland for sure, a few emails I sent out were to German language/Switzerland webpages, I did use an online translator and sent the emails in German and English, not sure how that works out? Not good with languages, what's the difference between German and Dutch, etc....and not sure how well the online translations come out?

Re: Austria
My experience with online translators is that there are a lot of words they dont know, so they put the untranslated, original word in. The end is an articel half english, half German.Although Germany and Holland are neighbour countries, the languges are totally different. At Highschool we learn Dutch, English, German and some even French. Dutch language has a lot of word in it from these three languges.

Re: Austria
Think you can best send your e-mails in english. Most people over here, but also in Germany understand english well. An e-mail half English, half German will be skipped quicker by the readers.
