F8 safe mode Windows XP
Windows XP
Right now I'm using the hub's computer.
I'm having a problem apparently, with one stupid program I really need to have installed on my computer...Firefox.
I need this browser for an internet work at home job I just got but...anytime it's installed on my computer, I get the blue screen or the black screen.
A few days ago, it was doing this, so I restarted got the black screen, was able to restart windows, uninstalled it and after a few days of running without Firefox, it was fine.
So, anxious to start this new internet job, I re-installed Firefox, and now I'm getting the Blue Screen and I'm not able to get past it to go on to the black screen for the "safe mode" ..."start normally" and all that.
For one....I'm not understanding why just a browser could cause such severe problems? Could it really be this new installation or most like a grumpy ole hardrive that just isn't taking to changes?
Secondly, now I need to use F8 during startup to go to safe mode so I can uninstall the Firefox and see if that again clears up the problem and I've totally fogotten how to do that, at what point during start up will I need to hit the F8 to be able to select safe mode?.

Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
When you boot up you get a screen from the computer brand start tapping F8 before the window screen. Once you get into the safe mode screen you should see a line that say last known good you can try that or go into safe mood itself Hope this helps you out.

Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
I think I'm screwed, now I just get the scarey blue screen, the one that says the computer shut down to protect itself and that's all I get.
It's been so long since I've had any real computer problems, so I don't remember at all how to get into the bios thing, and maybe that's for the best right now, if I don't remember how to get there, I'm sure I won't remember how to find what I'm looking for.
I think going into safe mode is in the bios too?
I can't imagine installing Firefox would screw with me this much, has to be a failing hard drive I would think...

Try this. XP Repair install
Please read carefully and make sure you followed the warning links before initiating the Repair Install. You can print a text version for reference. repair.txt
Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
To Repair Install, press ENTER
To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER. Do Not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, Do Not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
Hope this is enough. The link for this is Here:
[b]http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.html[/b ]
P.S.
I'm thinking your hard drive is on it's way out. That would definitely cause the blue screen of death. FireFox should not crash the OS.

Re: Re: Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
F8 - Safe Mode
Delete - Bios
F12 - Boot Order
Not the same for all puters but give it a try. Push keys a begining of start up or your have to redo. Careful in Bios don't want to change anything but boot order. Try the F12 key to see if it give you that same option

Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
I'm thinkin' you're right about the hard drive being on it's way out, just coincidental that it's been acting up so much when I've been trying to work with the installation of Firefox.
I do periodically move files I want to keep to the secondary hard drive so I won't lose too much if I have no choice but to switch out the hard drive with the OS.

Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
It needs whipped and whooped...freaky thing...now if I start up, it tries, then goes to blue screen but if you hit any key to stop the 3 step ckdsk ...xp loads in.
Just gonna move some files to the other hardrive today and reformat early next week.
Maybe some corrupt files on the hard drive with the OS? The hard drive isn't that old, no trauma, damage,

Try this:Boot from the CD use Recovery Console.
Type chkdsk /r at the prompt.
---------------------------------------------
Details from MS web page:
Running Chkdsk from the Recovery Console
Chkdsk is available from the Windows Recovery Console and can be a very valuable tool in dealing with a system that does not boot properly. The use of the Recovery Console is discussed elsewhere but note that many systems have been rescued by the Recovery Console command chkdsk C: /RSwitches for the Chkdsk command in the Recovery Console are not the same as those in Table I. There are only two: /P : Does an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors. Does not check for bad sectors /R : Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. Includes functions of /P

Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
Okay, I just checked Device Manager, and the only lit up with the big yellow question marks is in "other devices" Multimedia audio, video controllers and PCI input device, ah hell. I know that can't be it either.
I'll have to dig up the XP disc, its around here somewhere...

Did you just do a reinstall? If so you may just need to get drivers for those items.
If you have an Intel Mother Board for example with built in video and audio you need to go to Intel and down load the drivers. Also possible for the network card if it's built in. If need be open up the case and look at the mother board for what it is brand and model number. I can help you get the proper drivers.

If you computer came with a reinstall disk they should all be on that as well. If that's the case put the disk in the drive reopen the device manager by right clicking on the My Computer Icon on desktop, at the bottom of the drop down click Properties, Click Hardware tab, click Device Manager
Right click item with ? mark, choose update drivers and aim it to look at the CD drive.
So it sounds like you sorta up and running? If so run a check disk on C drive and see if it finds anything. Go to My Computer right click the C: drive and choose tools option tab...

Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
No reinstalls of drivers, nothing remarkable done lately at all, it was all good a little while back, remember when I was doing the Elements 7 trial? It was good before, it was fine after the trial and I uninstalled it...now over a week later, just since yesterday I've had this major problem.
The only recent changes at all were just for the internet job which was Firefox (required for the actual job, uninstalled now)Adobe flashplayer ( required for the training video courses) and I did a disk clean up last week, which is not unusual, do that every so often....that's all that different.

Without the drivers being installed you shouldn't have any sound at the vary least and you may have only VGA video default settings which may or may not give you many options for screen resolution and refresh rates if your using a crt type monitor you may only get 60htz refresh rate which will be hard on the eyeballs after a bit.

Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
Oh hell, here we go, just went to Computer management/system tools/system....
my first "error" there was about 7:30am on April 28....and that error is...yuck...
"The Device device/harddisk 0/D has a bad block...which I'm now reading means....yuck again...
Explanation :
The device has a bad block of memory, which Windows attempted to read. The data might be missing or corrupted.
Okay ChronicMigraineHeadacheGirl(that would be me) took long enough to even remember to go check the system tools error logs...I'm thinkin' reformat ain't gonna help me out now?
Actually, I've been running fine all morning, I have't even tried a restart yet today....

I was leaning to that conclusions as well. Give NewEgg a look see. The have some really good deals on oem packed drives. No fancy box or cables etc. but cheap!

Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
I shut down for a bit, just came in and restarted just fine, slow but everything loaded in with no blue screen...no errors in the system event log since 10:30 this morning...I dunno....I have no idea what would cause this? I don't get all rowdy with my computer, hardly ever download anything at all, etc...
The hubs and I are networked, I did notice that he had a problem with gamevance adware and I've seen acaiberry something somewhere on his computer, I do recall possibly an acaiberry virus alert but not finding anything online about it so far with google, I'll check snopes to see if its for real or a dumb ass erumor that ended up in my inbox....I'm pretty careful about internet security, but as I said, we are networked and apparently he was on this "gamevance" gaming site and he's got pop ups (inspite of pop up blocker) and all kinds of adware crap going on.

Nothing on acaiberry, and it did restart just fine...and the event logs look good...I would love to know what the hell went wrong...cuz hubs loves to blame it on me being some kind of total idiot...I'm pretty lame in the tech end, but I'm so sure I did absolutely nothing to cause this.

Can't be a wrong cable as it's either a IDE wide flat gray cable with black and blue connectors or it's SATA which is thin with a small connector. One won't fit the other. Bad cable is possible but I say more likely a bad drive. Run the check disk ad at the end it will tell you any bad sectors
I did have a bad piece of RAM in one computer that would cause it to crash. After a few crashes it would mess up the boot sector and required a fresh install to fix it. It's kind of trial and error with these things. If you have multi pieces of RAM you might try one at a time and see if it stay running.

Re: F8 safe mode Windows XP
She starts right up now (you're right, it must be a female )
I did clear out all the system restore check points this morning, I remember something about that can really bog down a hard drive...
The prob hubs had with his computer awhile back, that caused him to open up mine and mess with it, was supposedly a bad cable, a tiny hole in the gray ribbon cable. Okay, so I'm thinking since then mine has been slow and now this .....Oh now he didn't!! I'm sure he didn't switch cables with me. That would just be cold.

He may have in desperation to get his back up and running, done some cable switching, but I'm sure nothing intentionally.
Anyway, a crashing hard drive was probably a good experience for me, I keep copies of most everything I value on the second hard drive anyway, got a chance to think and discuss stuff I haven't thought about in years, got to talk to you, JJ so...I'm cool!

Okay, now.....I have re-read this thread over several times and gone over my system event logs....and combining the two....I may be able to keep my hard drive with just a re-format
JJ asked if I had any re-installations, I had so totally fogotten this, when I went to download the trial of Adobe Elements weeks ago, it wouldn't allow the download at first cuz it claimed I didn't have SP2 or better(which I thought was kinda odd, thought for sure I had it alread?)...I did the SP2 installation, windows update, and it looks like live update errors, atapi, disk errors all happen in the same order every time. I may have the wrong SP2 installed or somethin' like that...
Make any sense?
Anyway, will be trying the reformat anyhow, it's just been stimulating having a rousing conversation!

I've been doing a bit of reading and it seems like two possible causes:
1) Bad ide cable - Did the old man swap um on you??
2) Corrupt SP2 update. Retry a fresh SP2 update??
