How come?
Why is it I'll saunter in to a Family Dollar store or an Ocean State Job Lot store and shop around, buy stuff and tell my friends and family about what deals I got but when I visit Walmart, I do so in disguise and a store not in my neighborhood for fear that someone will recognize me?
Am I being silly? Am I afraid of being ridiculed or am I simply a cheap bastard that won't admit it?

Re: How come?
You're silly I think.
Where I live, you really have no choice but to shop at Walmart for your weeklies, like food, household supplies etc...for items like a good pair of shoes for the hubs to work in, we do go to more expensive shoe store, pay the extra bucks for a name brand to get the extra quality of good support and comfort, he does have to be on his feet for 12 hours at a time.
The local Dollar General often carries some things I just can't find anywhere else, they usually have the nicest variety of greeting cards.
I'm not ashamed to be seen or shop anywhere. What's the deal? Are Target or Big Lots people a better class than a Walmart Shopper? It's all the same to me.
I'd rather shop at my locally owned business when possible, I'd rather keep the money circulating amoung the local people, but I know times are tough, the budgets tight, and at least Walmart does support the local charities and the local communities with donations, etc....

Re: How come?
I work at Walmart so I do my main shopping there after work. I also shop the Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Don't hang my head when shopping at any store. Chazzy is right. Walmart does great work in the community.
take care

Re: How come?
I think VB (like me) just may be a fan of the stand up, monologue comedians, and movie comedies that often rely on stereotypes. In truth really, nothing wrong with that as long as we can differentiate between stereotypical humor and real life and that the stereotypes are just that and just an exaggeration of something or someone.
I think the comedy in the show "My Name is Earl" is hilarious, but I know the Lynard Skynard Trailer Park Trans Am Kmart shoppin' characters are just an over exaggerated compilation stereotype.
My banker shops at Walmart, so does my doctor, the local attorneys, the uppitties and those of a lower income do as well.
It is a real shame that once a Walmart is built in your town, the local smaller business not only suffer, but many disappear. But the Walmarts do generate revenue in their zip codes by taxes, community and charity donations as tiger and I mentioned before. Some surrounding communities do try to keep them out of their town, but they travel here to shop at ours.

Re: How come?
I just wanted to get someone to explain why it is that I have this deep seeded "dislike" for Walmart. I know the prices are a bit lower than their competitors and that is attractive.
I can't understand people shopping for clothes at Walmart when they can go into a Macys and get better quality clothing at decent prices. My wife has an account at Macys and she's always getting discount cards that when used on sale items, she leaves there with quality merchandise. jmo

Re: How come?
The nearest Macy's to me is about 100 miles, and I think, it just shut down.
Also, Walmarts, Kmarts, Targets...are all one stop shopping, clothing, grocerys, gardening and outdoor, pharmacy...
Fashion to allot of us is just too fadish and trendy, comes and goes too fast, after a couple of wears you done with it anyway, when it comes to a nice suit or dress, yeah...I'll go to a shop and buy a classic of quality.

Re: How come?
Since KMart and Sears merged a few years ago, it really doesn't matter any more. For all intents and purposes, KMart is the Sears. And besides, all the stores buy there stuff from the same vendors, or similar.
Macy's, I think the nearest one is a couple of hours away...

I'm surprised to hear you say that Macys is so far away from you. If it were close, say 10-20 miles away, would you maybe clothes shop there as an alternative to Walmart? Around me, there are no Super Walmarts (with groceries). Maybe they don't want to go toe to toe with the major grocers around here, I guess!
I have purchased Tommy Bahama shirts on sale at Macys for $30 on sale. That's about $70 less than the retail price. No other premium retailer matches their sale prices. jmo

If I had to drive a hundred miles or so to get to a major mall, I too would be inclined to shop Walmart......did I just say that?

Re: How come?
I live in an area and live a lifestyle that has no use for anything other than mostly utilitarian clothing for me and hubs.
I have no idea who Tommy Bahama is, and really don't need to know. It just doesn't fit for us. We rarely ever get to the city, go out to any resturaunt or place that would require us to concern ourselves with dressing up to impress anyone.
We invest in a few good pairs of jeans, a few shirts, blouses, decent shoes....that's all we need, that's all that makes sense for us.

The politically correct opinion is that Walmart is bad, for whatever reason. The reasons change frequently depending on where you live.
I don't always follow the politically correct opinions for anything. And I shop where I can find what I need for the least amount of money. Not always because money is tight but, because I don't like to spend it!

Re: How come?
There's nothing wrong with having pride in your appearance.
I don't think it's necessary to spend allot to do that, or be fixated on labels or designers, but it's like allot of things, you find a brand that you like, then stick with it!
I'm pretty fussy about coffee, shampoo and other things.

Re: How come?
I shop Target quite often for household items. It's a very nice and clean store and staffed quite well. Two things I've noticed about the local Walmarts is that they are not kept very neat and clean nor are they staffed worth a damn. Hopefully, the Walmarts in other parts of the country are in better condition. jmo

Here in the Southwest section of PA, the local Walmart's are kept very clean and organized. Now I will say something which is maybe not on target, but shopping at the Goodwill, there are alot of great deals, and many times, the items have never been used. I found out one thing about Goodwill which kind of pisses me off, and I'm not sure completely on this, is that they don't give all their monies to the people that need it, maybe I'm wrong, and I apologize if I am. Currently with the way the structure of our economy is, all of us are looking for ways to save.

Can't speak ill of the Walmart staff here, since I know most of them, lived in this area so long I've worked with them, lived with them, know them all from somewhere.

Bingo!! The Goodwill's have come a long way baby since the old days. They look better than the Walmarts, most of the Dollar Stores and the Ocean State Job Lot stores around here!

Re: How come?
Goodwill always has been clean and clear about stating how much of it's stores profit goes to it's charity end, the rest does go to salaries to those who run the charity, and other acceptable miscellaneous.
Even a charity can't run on nothin'

Re: How come?
Okay, had a chance finally to check out the Tommy Bahama website, just looked at the island wear ones, those look light and nice.
I know nuttin' about designers for sure, can readily admit that, but I can sure understand if you find a brand, label or designer that you do like the quality and fit of, stickin' with 'em....
I just love watching TLC's "What NOT to Wear"...hell, break their fashion rules every waking moment, but if I lead a different kind of life...I'd so look good!!!

Re: How come?
It's funny though. I am a Ralph Lauren and Tommy Bahama aficionado. Those two labels are very conservative so I wear them. I'm not a rich man by any means but I do shop for those brands.......when they are on sale and very rarely at full retail.

Yeah, I don't get out much...the nearest Sears to me is about a 45 minute drive and that's where we got to buy lawn mowers, stoves, and weed eaters...

Re: How come?
From what I see of "civilization" on the news daily, I'll stick with livin' with the squirrels!
I'm guessing however, the same thing about the Walmart clothing racks turn us both off maybe?
When I walk through to do my weekly house hold shopping (groceries, health and beauty, pet supplies etc...) I pass by the garment racks that are most prominentlly displayed and it's mostly geared towards teens (or so it seems to me) very faddish young stuff I wouldn't look at in any store really, and the mens wear department is usually stocked with message or graphic t-shirts up front.
The last garment I bought at Walmart was a pair of pin stip trouser style pants, pretty much a basic item and I something I needed for a one time, maybe twice wear.

Re: How come?
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Kohl's, Marshall's, TJ Max or Burlington Coat Factory. I buy all of my casual clothes from those places. For dress clothes, it's typically S&K Men's Wear or The Men's Warehouse.
Personally, I cant stand crowded stores, which is why I avoid Walmart, Target and K Mart stores. I can honestly say that I've never bought any clothing from any of them. And the only times I have bought anything at all from them was when they had something that I couldnt find any where else, or their advertised prices were too good to pass up. And at least around here, there are plenty of grocery food stores to choose from, so I wouldnt even think to go to any of those places for food items. I dont have anything against any of them, I just dont like the crowds and I dont like where theyre located.

I hit the Kohls, the Targets, the TJ MAX's. Of the three, TJ MAX is good for name label clothing at pretty good prices!
