New Computers
Ok. I bought my last computer in 1999. Needless to say, I need to buy a new one, since I can't upgrade to high speed internet. And I haven't paid any attention to electronics since 1999.
What do I need to look for?
Which brand does what?
What is the difference between linux, mac and pc?, including which is most cost effective.
Any other advice or endorsements?

Linux is free - Biggest learning curve. It's what Mac is based on so a mac user would be kinda at home. Might work on your old computer. What kind of guts in it? Linux and Mac are way better in terms of safety on the internet as all bugs are written for Windows they just don't cause issues on Linux and Mac. No virus software required!! Linux can run a lot of Windows programs but has many free ware applications to do most jobs like PhotoShop and MS Office...Macs are most expensive of the three formats. Skip anything from Microsoft with Vista. Hold out for Windows 7 if you go that route

Re: New Computers
JesseJames is right. Me and the wife have Macs and we will never own anything else. You don't get virus's and they just don't crash. We used to have to update our computers about every 2 to 3 years. With PC's, they are pretty much obsolete the minute you buy them. The computer stores have more powerful computers in the back, but will not put them out on the floor until they sell there older inventory. Mac has been around a long time and have only had 10 upgrades in all those years. A Mac will last basically forever. My daughter has had the same one for 13 years and not a single problem with it.

Re: New Computers
As far as Mac. we've been told that most programs won't work with them and that you have to buy special printers and such. The camera programs won't work with mac because they only design for windows.

Can't put a chevy starter on a ford neither! Look at your camera software most have both options. As far as printers it's kinda the same issue. While you can't use say a Dell brand printer any 'real' printer should offer drivers for both. Macs are pretty smart animals. Most 'issues' are urban myths started by people who don't know any better Back to the software issue Google "WINEHELPER" its a small program that will allow you to run many native Windows apps directly on an Intel based Mac. Oh and it 100% free! Mac's ruled the roost in the graphics world for years. So feel they still do.
PC's have an upper hand in the gaming world. Not nearly as many games available in Mac OS as in Windows mainly due to the shear volume of windows boxes in play.

Re: New Computers
I'm not tryin' to sell a Mac or a PC. I like them both. However if you look at how many people make a really good living maintaining PC in the business world it makes you think about other options. Some PC sellers like Dell also offer a few Linux options. Linux is very Mac like or maybe it's Mac is very Linux like? Any how it's all good except maybe for Vista. I've read that Microsoft is going to offer a free Windows 7 upgrade when available for any one who buys a current Vista machine. Can't say when Microsoft ever gave anything away for free! On that note not all current hardware and software will play nicely with W7. It's going to take some time to get it all up to speed.
