Discussions of ethics...
I love them...I love the "What would you do" and "What do you think is right for you" kinda thing.
A very common question to open a topic of discussion (been around forever) is the "Would you steal the medicine" Question, several variations on it, but I'll relay the best I can, the one I remember being used in classes and discussions most often.
**********
If you have a loved one dying, but there was a cure at the local pharmacy for them, but it's so expensive you cannot pay for it, would you steal the medicine or abide by the law?
*********************************
(Anyone else got any of these types of scenarios? I'm sure there's plenty of them out there on the web, or maybe one you remember from classes, course, reading, discussions? )

Re: Discussions of ethics...
I'm an ethics freak too Chazzy...kind of turned it into my work passion...
I am a rule follower by nature so I would be completely conflicted by the medication thing. I know a few years ago we struggled with my Mom's illness. She did have insurance for the medication she was on but when she passed away we were left with thousands of dollars of medication and no one could take it. We were told if we wanted to leave it on a table at the oncologists office we were welcome to do that and walk away so someone that needed it could take it...

Re: Discussions of ethics...
I'm afraid my loved one would come first. Even if I had to sell the house and everything in it.
When we went through a bad time, we got all our medication taken care of, fortunately, we dont have the problems you do. But, if we did, I know that I would rather be possessionless and live with mother or mother in law than to be without each other.

Oh, no, we didn't have to make a choice between Mom's life or not. We lost her in spite of all medical technology on our side. If I could have extended Mom's life I would have done everything possible. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much money you have or what medications are available, they just can't be saved...

I agree, I lost a niece who was 7. The whole town helped with the bills but it didn't help
She was always a happy go lucky girl and to the end always told people not to feel sad as she was happy to have met them and gotten to know them. It just goes to show you that sometimes we can find strength in places we wouldn't expect.

Re: Discussions of ethics...
I've seen this question in several ethics courses and classes...the answers always surprised me, how many answered that they would not break the law, their ethics steered them to the legal side, not the humanitarian side.
For me, I just answered of course I would steal the medicine, save the life, then turn myself in and pay the legal and social consequences.

Re: Discussions of ethics...
if it even had a slight chance of helping my loved one who was sick I'd steal it in a heartbeat. in my opinion ethical means doing what you believe is right no matter what the cost. anything i can do for a loved one will be done. cant say i would turn myself in though either. lol

Pharmaceutical companies have been steeling from us for years! Hell yeah, I'd steel the meds to save the life of a loved one!

Re: Discussions of ethics...-New Problem
It is easily arguable that people who park inconsiderately e.g. block roads or obstruct fire hydrants (US only I think) risk killing others because the emergency services can't get access. The people who commit these offences are often otherwise law-abiding and are likely to respond to an increase in the punishment for this offence.
Conversely, terrorists know they are likely to die while commiting their offenses or to be executed for their crimes afterwards, but go ahead and commit them anyway. Clearly it makes no difference what punishment is allocated for them.
Therefore, to protect society to the fullest, sentencing policy should be changed to make car parking offences a capital offence punishable by death and to let terrorists off scot free.
