Sound systems
How much are you into your sound system/stereo? We do have one TV hooked up to the stereo for watching movies, couldn't even tell you the brand name of it. Just a simple hook up with a couple of speakers, but wonder if the surround sound set up with all the satelite speakers is worth it. I do notice in some movies that the background music can over ride the dialog, which is pretty annoying, don't know what the deal is there?
My car radio/cd player is pretty fine, but just factory installed stuff, the hubs has a Pioneer in his truck, he's pretty proud of it.
Neighbor kid has that "boom boom boom" thing going on in his little car, don't think I would like that too much.

Re: Sound systems
I was pretty interested in that stuff as a teenager, 30 plus years ago. Back then cars, especially used cars I could afford, only had AM radio, so I was always scheming to upgrade the system in my car(s). Remember 8-track players? Thats what most of my cohorts tried to get for their cars, often with an FM converter. Since later model cars often came with decent sound from the factory, I quit worrying about it. I hear those kids driving around with the heavy bass going "BOOMP BOOMP BOOMP" and wonder how much hearing loss they already have. And since I can hear the various panels on their car vibrating and rattling, I wonder if that noise shortens the life of the car's body.

Re: Sound systems
I have a Bose Lifestyle 38 system. It is my main sound system in my humble home. Along with my 60in plasma screen and Blu-Ray dvd player, I get true theater sound with all the dialog and background sounds at the proper levels. This model was designed for watching movies. It works superb. I am very proud of it!
Was the Bose worth the big bucks I paid? Yeh, except for the fact that 2 months after I bought it and had it installed, I saw the same model in the same store for half of what I paid. Granted, it was a open box-demonstrator model but still......
If you see one in a store such as BestBuy or CircuitCity, consider it. Nothing out there can match it for the price. If there is one that's offered as a demo model, buy the damn thing. You won't regret it. You'll probably feel obligated to "upgrade" your tv because the sound will floor you!!

Re: Sound systems
I've heard nuttin' but good about the Bose, I'm not much into the whole electronics thing, but I've wondered about the deal with some of the movies we rent and the background noise and soundtrack seem to really drown out the dialog. Didn't know if we maybe need to learn how to set the sound in the settings better, or adjust the stereo/speakers the TV is run through.

Ha ha, my wife calls our loo, the stinkeroo after I've been in there a while!! Maybe some tunes piped in there might be a very "relaxing" thing......for some of us that are "backed up"!!

Re: Sound systems
Ah, now were talking my language! Good old 2 channel stereo equipment is one of my obsessions. I have spent more on audio stuff then I would ever admit to! Most made right here in USA. Some of it even has tubes! Thank God only my eyes are going bad and not my ears!!
Home theater is another story. Done right the sound is what makes the movie. Even a modest TV can be pretty impressive with a proper home theater sound system. Bose is fine and you pay for the slickness of the packaging and simple setup but I've also experienced some very dynamic sound from many much less theater in a box set up costing less then $300.00. Remarkable what 5 small speakers and sub woofer can do.

What......Bose over priced? Damn right it is! That's why I suggested that you buy a demo model or an open box special. Usually, those prices are considerably cheaper so you end up with a superior product at a more reasonable than the manufacturers retail price.
If you want to be floored when watching a blu-ray disc of a movie like "Pearl Harbor", watch it on a plasma tv with the audio pumped through a Bose system. You will be impressed!!
You know the old saying? You wanna play? You gotta pay!!!

Re: Sound systems
Cost is relative in the audio world. Hell I've seen people spend $1000.00 dollars or more on a single 3 foot power cord and way more on high end RCA to RCA cables not to mention upwards of 10 thousand dollars on speakers. Audio is just plain expensive on the hi end. I too have a little Bose 321 on my old 27" Sony TV. It's not a bad radio and DVD are fine. It sure isn't Bose best but it is a good compromise for a simple 3 speaker set up that offers much of the enjoyment and sound experience of it's bigger brothers. Still when it comes to real music my 2 channel rig wins hands down.

Yamaha Receiver (350 amps), Sony 5-CD Changer, Sony dual-cassette tape player, Klipsch Speakers, these work pretty good for me with sound.

Klipsch are nice. Which do you have? I have always wanted the older ones with the big midrange horn style drivers. I have an old pair or Altec A7's that are the big daddys of horn style speakers.

When I bought all that stuff last year, I didn't intend to go all out. It just kinda snowballed. I didn't know how high the price was going to be until I wrote the damn check. The installation was almost as much as the equipment. I almost walked away but I didn't. No regrets from me!!

Just use caution, they'll tell you you need the gold or platinum short cords (20' or less). We just put them on the scope and there's no difference between them and a good copper one.

That's the sad point when you know your in over your head! When you change a simple RCA cable or even harder to believe a power cord and it really changes the sound stage, bass vocals etc...Your in deep! The funny thing is installing hi-end cables usually hurt the over all sound till they burn in for like 100 hours. Crazy I know but I have experienced it several times. The biggest shock came when I upgraded the power cord on my cd player from the basic round computer cord to a cord from a company called PS Audio. It's around $60.00 for a 1 meter cord but it's massive and has plug ends that dwarf the original cable. After a brief burn in of a long weekend the sound was absolute amazing. Best $60.00 I ever spent on audio stuff.
While your most likely 100% correct about the lines on a scope it's all about how it sounds. Gold ends do make good contact but in a lot of cases I think the quality of the cable ends make more of a difference. When you looking at quality cables I think the cost of gold plating the connector is rather insignificant.

I agree with you Jesse, my only point was that people should watch out for those companies that will sell you something that you can't hear. IE they will sell you cables at a high price and you think it's great. However they don't tell you that it's out of the human hearing range I've been running into that more often than I'd like to these days
I'd like to hear more about that power cable you purchased though.

I'd like to hear more about that power cable you purchased though.
The latest version is even a bit less expansive. This is from their we page. (If you can remove the stock cord and it looks like the same plug that your computer has it's the ICE version you need).
"Our most affordable, entry level AC power cord is perfect for any source equipment, digital products and small to medium power amplifiers.
PS AC power cables are unequalled from a construction quality and performance standpoint. There are none better in the world.
The Power Punch is affordable and allows anyone to replace their stock power cables and make an immediate improvement.
The C7 style of connector works for any consumer product like an Xbox, CD player or DVD with the smaller end. The standard IEC model works with any detachable cable product.
interconnect cables and power cords really can make noticeable improvements however I think it takes relative high end equipment and critical listing skills to fully recognize the changes. Some changes are very slight and no drought imagined because one wants to hear improvement after spending a lot of money while others are very apparent to a critical listener. The trick is to have a good reference track that you have played many times and use that to A/B compare the changes from one set up to the next. With any cable or for that matter component always give it a good break in period of atleast 100 hours of play time before you draw any conclusions. Many audiophiles types leave there systems powered up 100% of the time. As with any hobby if it makes you happy it's all good.
