Re: friendly little outdoor critters
Got bird feeders, keep binoculars and bird book on the table...
Love wathcing nature, fed the orioles for the first time this past spring, gorgeous birds!
Sadly, I also noticed and reported the spread of a bird virus which left some of them with horrible tumors, but that has now passed.
Since the lack of bees last year, had to buy squirrel food. They just wasn't any polination going on so...no nuts!
I'm happy to live where seeing critters is common but always awesome! eagles and vultures, to groundhogs and red fox.

Re: friendly little outdoor critters
The chipmunks come and go here, didn't see many at all this year.
Walking in the yard is like walking on marbles with all the hickory nuts and acorns but we had none at all last year....the cats love it when I bring in a handfull for them to play with. I put seed just outside a window or two to amuse them too.

Re: friendly little outdoor critters
We put out seed and suet for the wintertime birds-Blue Jays, Cardinals, Downey Woodpeckers, juncoes, and peewees among others, also some Mourning Doves that forget to migrate. The summertime birds have to look out for themselves, except we do put out sugar water for the Hummingbirds. You might think there arent any hummingbirds in your area, but put out a hummingbird feeder with sugar water in it, and in a couple of weeks you'll be wondering where they all came from. The Owls, crows, ducks, and geese seem to take care of themselves.

Re: friendly little outdoor critters
ya seems to be a lack of them and i dont mind them too much just that they kick all the seed out of the big feeder , they just want them there black sunflower seeds, when we are out in the garden you can see them all hopping around the yard and they are planting the seed so when it rains they all pop up alla over the yard.
have to put up some suit now that its cooler i have a few woodpeckers that visit too i got pictures of one he's just a king size one with a orange head amd a few ladderbacks too

Re: friendly little outdoor critters
Chazzy, have you ever noticed a Pileated Woodpecker's nest hole? Unlike other wood peckers, they cut rectangular entrance holes. I never quite believed this til I was cutting up a downed tree that had one in it.

Unfortunately no friendly little critters, just the annoying blackbirds and pigeons.

Re: friendly little outdoor critters
I went out and bought a hummingbird feeder not too long ago. Me and the kids were outside when he just came down and hoovered right above my little one's head. I had to keep him fed after that.

when i was younger, we lived out in the country, we had a black walnut tree...i used to get a laugh when the stray cats would chase the squirrels up it, and the squirrels would bomb them with the walnuts....

Re: friendly little outdoor critters
wow lonly, that a good way to train them to pick nuts for ya then ya can make a pan of brownies .....we had squirrels bombing us with acorns out in the woods at times when we are cutting firewood. not much more for them to throw at ya, no hickory's nuts up here.
humming birds remember ya putting them feeders out year after year, they are neat and we like sitting on the deck in summmer watching them chase each other . in the spring we get the hummers and the oreos at the same time . we even had a flock of turkeys one morning right by the back door, i got the cam a got to snap a few shots of thenm. i even had a few cedder wax wings bounch off the window twice i think now , ya hear whomp on the glass and go out and there be something lying on the ground looking at ya like it still seeing stars yet lol

Re: friendly little outdoor critters
Sguirrles are funny, quite smart too.
Got a possum living in one of my sheds, (last year I posted about the nasty thing making his home on my front porch, now he's content to living in the shed out back and I'm content with that too)
Oh yeah, ash...I've got a few of those big woodpecker nests in several trees!
Just took down the hummingbird feeders for the year, they've migrated on out of my area, but next spring, I'll walk outside and they will buzz my head telling me it's time to hang the feeders back up.

Oh yeah, they are pushy little shits! They will flat out let you know if the feeder is empty, mildewing, or you didn't get the water/sugar ratio to thier liking.
I've had one or two, for some reason....fly right into my kitchen when I've opened the door.
Had a goldfinch flying around my upstairs spare room just a few weeks ago, had the window cracked open just enough, I finally herded him back on out, much to my cat's disappointment.

Re: friendly little outdoor critters
I used to have a squirrel that used to come around pretty much daily. If you were laying in the back yard catching a tan or swimming, he'd come right up and take an ice cube from your drink. He'd also take food from you hand. We stopped giving him stuff when my son was a little older out of fear he might try and grab it.
It was really cool for a while though, my stepdaughter and niece got a big kick out of it.

Re: friendly little outdoor critters
Yeah you have to watch out for those squirrels with no hair on the tail. To me squirrels are nothing more than a rat with a furry tail.
However they will always secure me in my job
