I do believe that the chirp, chirp will continue until the battery is totally dead. Just remove the outer cover and you will find the battery, 9 volt.

Yep, it's a safety feature in smoke alarms to chirp annoyingly to tell you it's time to change the battery.
You don't want to put up with the noise, it's tellling you it's time, so you'll want to change the battery as soon as possible (Usually, they are a 9-volt, I think)

That's all I can do JC is plug them up at night, the location of where the detector is, is the concern/problem. I've always made it a habit to change the batteries in the detectors around this time of the year or close to when the time changes which I think is a good reminder for everyone.

Well, depending on your smoke detector, the chirping may never stop. In my condo, all the smoke detectors are powered through a back up system and the batteries are only used when the power goes out (but it will still chirp when they're low). Good news is that a battery will last 5-10 years depending on the specific system.
