Re: how the west was won...???
Recently watched "The Assination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford"
Brad Pitts plays Jesse, and it's not a typical western with allot of gunfights...but I really liked it.

Re: how the west was won...???
I think "Tombstone" is a great flick. Kevin Costner's Earp movie was ok-it was more historically accurate, but as an example of cinematic art not as good as Tombstone. The Tom Selleck version of "Monte Walsh" (a Turner Broadcasting made-for-tv movie) is one of the best movies about actual working cowboys that I've seen. John Wayne's "The Shootist" is a great flick and maybe his best. "The Mountain Men" with Charleton Heston and Brian Keith, while maybe not strictly a "western" is a great movie about the West. In a different vein, the movie version of "Oklahoma" was kind of a western which I like. Yeah, I like westerns.

I know that the ones shot in Italy were called "Spaghetti Westerns" ... I think allot of these include the Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson era movies...

Re: how the west was won...???
Whoops, had a little google time, so I correct myself, these films were not filmed in Italy but financed by Italian companys...
************************
Between 1960 and 1975, European film production companies made nearly 600 Westerns. Critics either blasted or ignored these films, and because most of them were financed by Italian companies, they called them Spaghetti Westerns. Fans of the genre embraced the term which is now lovingly used to label any Western made and financed by Continental filmmakers.

The Russel Crowe recent movie, "3:10 to Yuma" was another I really liked. A good western in classic style.

I think at least some of the so-called spaghetti westerns were filmed in Spain. I dont know how to define "Western" either.
