Food Pantries
Sorry, it's my fav cause, my fav "charity"....the local food pantries...
Usually in November, the Boy Scouts do their annual food drive and will come by and pick it up at your door step.
If it's at all possible, to pick up one extra item each week for the food drives, I'm pleading on their behalfs.
All the food pantries are in dire need now, they are trying to supply a huge increase in families in need now because of the economic problems. The jump in numbers of families in need is breaking down the pantries.

Re: Food Pantries
I try to give as much as I can to the local food banks. We have several in the neighboring town and the schools here are always doing a canned food drive. That, coupled with the penny wars throughout the year (at the end of the year, it's given to local charities), I'd have to say that I'm very proud of our community and their efforts to leave no family without.

Re: Food Pantries
I know allot of canned goods are always donated, things like canned vegetables...I try to donate things like jello, Kool ade, instant hot chocolates, anything that are "just add water"....those complete meals in a box are good, and during the holidays, I try to throw in some candy canes, and tins of cookies.
All the local food pantries around here are pretty strained right now, they all put their plea for donations on the front page of the local papers.

Re: Food Pantries
The pantries/banks are also in dire need of hygiene items, soap, deordoarant, shampoo, diapers, toothpaste, feminime hygiene stuff.
Allot of this kind of stuff, I can get off a freebie/samples site.

Re: Food Pantries
The local ones in my area are also asking for pet food too, I know I would just be in a fit if I ever had to look any of my little creatures in the eyes knowing I had nothing to feed them.
I've seen very cheaply priced bags of pet food at the dollar store, gonna make sure I pick up a small bag everytime I shop there.

Re: Food Pantries
Visited my parents yesterday, mom made a point of going through her pantry and gave me a basket of food to donate,
On the average, one local food pantry will help nearly 200 families or well over 550 people, so...there's at least 2 or three children per family.
Things are tight right now, hubs is off work due to his recent heart stent proceduce,but...still can manage a few items a week.

Re: Food Pantries
Good on ya for thinking of the pets to Chazzy The pet store here has an offer for free food when you buy so many bags. My son and I always donate it and she is more then happy to comply. We also have the ability to buy certain items to be donated while we're shopping. I think this is a great way to help out those in need.
I'm also looking into a way to donate the fish that I catch. My freezer is full so..........

Re: Food Pantries
I dunno about fish, the food pantry in my area does take deer meat...I think the hunters donate part of their deer at the processing meat place.

Re: Food Pantries
I had to bump this one..... my daughter told me about a web site that the students went to in math class yesterday. I know we're not supposed to post sites, but I hope you'll allow this one.....
For every answer you get right, they donate 20 grains of rice. There are all kinds of subjects to choose from. Math is the easiest. For the word meanings, just find an on line dictionary for the ones you don't know.....
This is so easy to do, it's fun and for a great cause!
