Re: NYSE
Talk about a hyper intensed, nerve wracking job! I wonder when they return home from work, do they just eat, flop, then go to sleep? Don't get me wrong, they make the big bucks but that's no life, everything being based around money, money is called GREED! To me some are snakes, and sooner than later, they will get burnt out, or on tranqs, one or the other. Then you wonder how it affects their relationships; why there are so many broken down marriages in this world. They don't know the meaning of 'Need' VS 'Want' living beyond their means, the more they make, the more they want, what a vicious cycle. Living on prestige and status, where does it really get you?

Re: NYSE
MY friends earn mega money, and have wonderful houses etc, but their jobs are really stressful and one of them has come close to the edge on a few occasions. But they will all retire by the time they are 45, so not all bad!!!

Re: NYSE
I dunno JC...there are tons of professions that create unimaginable stress....first responders and paramedics, police officers, correction officers, firefighters, nurses, doctors, race car drivers, even major league sports atheletes....why do they choose such stressful careers? The suicide and divorce rate are usually really high for these kind of careers too...but people have talents, skills, niches, some started following their path for very personal reasons early on in thier lives...maybe some people do feel more fullfilled, more utilized, more alive working so hard at such stressful things....maybe a steady job with security and benefits would squelch or lessen their quality of life. Some love the security of something steady and some like to really go for broke.
Who know why someone would chose to be a stock broker, or trader...some are meant for the world of finance, (oh not me) some are meant for saving lives in the medical/firefighting/police field, some are meant to thrill and be thrilled with fast cars and stunts...
It's a job, and somebody has gotta be in there doing it, I won't diss anyone for their profession, these professions need to he filled, these jobs need to be done, and there are those cut out for doing them.

I was just wondering others opinions on this. Been through the "makes lots of money and retire early thing" and for me, life is much higher quality of life not living that way. I like to hear what others think about this as well. I understand the challenges of such a life and some people thrive on those challenges. Not feeling fulfilled unless they are doing those things.

Re: NYSE
I too prefer a slower, simpler life, but I sure as hell am extremely happy and grateful to those who chose to do the stressfull stuff, it's gotta be done and I sure don't wanna do it!
Someone has gotta be on that floor pulling their hair out, hearts pumping, adrenaline rushing, shortneing their expected life span with all that mess and stress, doing all that trading, buying selling...our economy depends on these people...our major business and corporations depend on them, so do a million or so (just guessing with that number...throwing it out there) regular people with retirement portfoilios...just regular people trying to invest a little.
I too would love to hear more from trader and brokers about thier careers...or from people who invest.

The guys HBG are talking about knowing, one of them is my brother, he loves his job, he loves the stress and how cut throat his job is. He knew what he was getting into when he started at the bottom at 18, but as he says, the money is worth it. He chooses to do the job, he likes the money that comes with it, the life he can give his family and the fact that in three years he retires and can enjoy his family.

Thanks for that. I suppose that it's a matter of choice and like most occupations, it has it's stress, burnout levels and rewards for tolerating that. The burnout factor as well. Just wondering about how the people involved feel about this occupation.

I suppose the term would be how the people in this field feel about what they do as compared to others in different occupations. I've always felt that if you're not happy with your occupation, you should find one that makes you happy.----Most of the time anyway.

Re: NYSE
Another thought...I wonder after their retirement from these high stressed positions how does it affect their health? I've seen within a few years into their retirement all havoc breaks loose with their health, and everything they worked so hard for they can't enjoy, and goes down the tubes, including health, finances, and their relationships, in turn changes their whole life. Just so sad. Life is a balancing act throughout our lives and we learn as we live! Don't live to work, work to live!

Re: NYSE
Oh shoot, on the other hand, I've seen many a person able to retire early, travel, cruises, even go back to school and start new careers all over again.
Some of the most amazing, imaginative and beautiful folk art I've seen is produced by bored people that didn't have the chance to explore a talent they didn't even know they had untill they retired.
I guess if you are extremely stressed but take care of yourself, have a good family medical history,(good genes) you'll live long no matter what your career is or when you decide to retire.

I would have thought, once you retire the stress has gone, so you can start to relax and enjoy what you have worked towards, a well earned rest!!!
