Analog TV
February 17, 2009...the date we are all familiar with now as being the day that anyone using an Ariel antennae or rabbit ears, will not be able to receive any Television signals and broadcasts.

I know the Big G is offering a coupon to offset the cost of the converter box that will be necessary to receive broadcasting signals with an older analog television set...but just curious...does anyone really know how much it will cost someone when this February date arrives?

I've googled it a bit, but it all says..."it depends" and prices will vary.

Do you think that it will still be affordable to everyone to still be able to have a working television when this switch is made?

Re: Analog TV
My wife picked up two of those boxes. I'm pretty sure they were next to nothing cause she is friggin cheap when it comes to this kind of stuff. Oddly the one little set we have in the kitchen has a way better picture with it then we could ever get with analog reception alone. Never could read any text on screen but now it's sharp as a tack and beautiful color...Go figure.

Re: Analog TV
From the information I obtained in February of this year on the Federal Communication Commission website, there's an attached government link explaining all the detailed information necessary for this transition for all Analog T.V.'s, and it will be affordable for everyone.

Re: Analog TV
They sure make it sound that way....affordable to everyone, but I know the economy sucks, and even the food pantries are trying to feed twice as many people than they were months ago, some people are forced to cut back on needed meds and NOT fill all their prescriptions, and stuff like that....not so sure about that "affordable to everyone" thing really>

OF course I'm speaking of the current economy, by this February date, I sure as hell hope things will be on the upswing!

That's all I got from what few sites I was able to visit today ....affordable, prices will vary...

Re: Analog TV
I totally understand what your saying Chazzy, affordable to one might not be affordable to someone else, which can suck! With the holidays right around the corner, hopefully that will make a positive impact on our economy. If one asks, what do you want as a gift for the holidays, tell them you want a converter. Hey it's better than getting something you can't and won't use, right? I've made the call using the link from the FCC website, for a few friends to obtain the coupon, in turn, they did recieve it.

Re: Analog TV
We just got a packaged deal from out phone/isp company, super freakin' fast dsl, unlimited phone, and digital cable...so we're good.

But I sure would hate to think that this lil' ole converter box thing would cost enough to knock anyone out of the broadcasting loop...even just basic local stations, we all need to keep up on local and national news, so many occupations depend on weather forecasts and all...I was just wondering about the whole thing...

Re: Analog TV
i got mine at wal mart of 49.95 i also got 2 coupon's for the boxes ...they were 40 bucks each so i spent 10 bucks for the tuner , walmart had ones made by RCA , they work OK for me with a all Chan. amped antenna up on the roof.im still progarming in the chan. but they are all clear no snow.rabbit ears are ify, seen ones, again wal mart made by phillips that are amped, for 23 bucks, may or may not work.....

Re: Analog TV
That sounds about right Ash, it pretty much boils down to you paying no more than $20.00 for each converter box using the coupon. From what friends/family have told me about using DSL, Cable or whatever T.V. service you use, you don't need to purchase a converter box, the companies are complying with the FCC and it will be included within the service you're paying for.

Re: Analog TV
Chances are if you still have a "working' analog set and it's connected to an outside antennae, then you probably don't give a sh*t about how the picture looks like and feel this mandated digital upgrade is one more way the man is out to get all your money!

One more thing I've noticed that about the coming digital mandate conversion is that retailers that sell televisions are stating falsehoods about the change. They are falsely advertising that the new digital mandate is a high definition upgrade. They, such as QVC are telling perspective new television buyers that all stations are converting all signals to high definition broadcasts as of Feb. 19, 2009. I'm sure most non-digital or high definition un-savy people are freakin' confused.

I wish someone would step up and give a tutorial on television about what is coming next February. jmo

Re: Analog TV
As of this Sunday, I will no longer be involved in this concern of the change over in Feb/09. I am going Dish Network. All Digital and High Definition with no analog issues.

Wish me good luck!!

Re: Analog TV
I have both types of TV's. Neither gets very good receiption. But the Digital is very good, when it comes in. I still haven't found the right palce for the antenna, as of yet. But even when I'm getting good recieption one day, the next day the weather will change and it all sucks again. I will have to breakdown and get cable, I guess.

HBG, since your so dirty, I'll be happy to escort you to the shower and clean you all up. It's the least I can do.

Re: Analog TV
radio shack tried to charge me 20 bucks for the converter ,i got mine at walmart for ten.
so whats happing is they are going to use the same transmitters and on the 2009 date will turn off analog transmission and turn on digital. this will be for your local Chan's. that you would get your weather and news on.
cable and the little dishes will all ready be sending it.
rabbit ears will work close to the transmitters if you are more rural like us out in the sticks 50 miles from the closes transmitter your going to need a better antenna system, a few of the neighbors have told me they got them and took them back, they didn't work or barely worked
mine work just fine , it auto programs and has a TV guide and parental controls and a signal straight meter for turning the rotor, do u have a rotor? even tells the time lol

I'm sorry but an outside antennae and a f*ckn' rotor? WTF is that? They have color tv now and cable and satellite! Maybe it's time you tossed the old black and white in the trash!

I put mine in the attic. That way I didn't have to worry about putting holes in my shingles.

Hey, you can only watch one at a time anyway. So what is the need for like 1,000 channels.
