Re: Would you or could you be a 24/7 Family Caretaker?
I know what's ahead for me, and my parents, they are at a time of their lives now where they are so aware of their own mortality, of course they want to speak about it and prepare, and of course, we don't want to hear that talk from them.
I've been a 34/7/365 for a 18 year old cat for over a year, and I am pretty much having my life run by a 17 year old dog...so I'm sure I will be able to step up to the parental care taking when the time comes.
I can understand the frustration, anguish and exasperation that it takes, how one totally loses themselves in the process of taking charge of someone else's life..

I watched mom take care of her mom for several months after grandmom had broken her hip. This when moom was working full time.
I watched mom take care of dad for years when his health was failing.
I'd have to say NO There's people and places far more qualified.!!!!

Yep, JC...there are times when just the average person just cannot provide the proper care needed.
I would have to say if it comes to the point where injections, IV's, fibulators are necessary...then I would not be qualified to give that kind of care. It would be a very bad thing for all involved.
I would want my parents to have the best of care by qualified and trained personnel.
At this point in my parnets life, if I could, I would add an in-law suite to my house and have them living here with me right now. Just so I can be that near if they do need me and I would worry less, but yet they could still enjoy the independance they have left.

It's not only the injections, IVs ans such. It's a very large physical and mental strain to deal with all of this. Not only from the actual activities necessary to take care of the person but watching a loved one in such a position.

Did that for several years with my mom. It was tough but thank God I had an understanding and helpful husband and 2 wonderful teenage boys that pitched in as well. The boys would stay with and take care of grandma so that hubs and I could have some time out. Not many teenage boys would or could do that. They are special. Finally had to put Mom in a nursing home when home care required things that I just was not physically able to do. I lost her a couple of years ago and still miss her very much.
