Hey Chazzy....did ya watch?
Just got finished watching Billy Ray on the History Channel. It was a very good show. I have seen many of the tunnels and bridges in SW Virginia of the Clinchfield Railroad. Brings back memories.
I don't care what anyone says, you can not beat the southern hospitality! I don't think I want to go to the snake handler church though.

Re: Hey Chazzy....did ya watch?
Oh, I watched, I missed a few bits here and there but pretty much watched it all...wished they had a little more of the music though but I just loved the show.
I researched some on the snake handlers once a long time ago, I was studying up on fundamentalist religions...feet washers was another one.
It really made me a bit homesick, I haven't been back to hills in over three years now, the landscape I saw in the show was very similar, there of course you have the gorgeous mountains, where I come from, it's hills, but similar with all the trees, ferns, rivers and creeks....the rivers and railroads cut through tall towering red bluffs.
Even the coal mines are a bit similar to the iron ore mines here.
(And just to rile up VB....hey, wasn't Billy Ray lookin' HOT?)

Re: Hey Chazzy....did ya watch?
So much was so familiar to me...when the show opened with Popcorn Sutton, and I saw him sitting in that bent willow branch chair...wow...and yes, I've drank moonshine from a mason jar, it does kick ass, but it as clear and clean as it looks.
For those that may want to check it out...it'll run again at these times, and the history channel website will have more scheduled times. (I don't know what time zones these are for?)

Re: Hey Chazzy....did ya watch?
It is worth watching again. Brings back memories; my father use to tell of his father playing the fiddle and the song "Bonaparte's Retreat" Wish they would go more into the music, like you said Chazzy.
The food in southern Virginia..tomato gravy, mixed pickles, corn, and beans. Fried bologna, cornbread, pinto beans. I am just rambling on....
Ahhhhh the hill language...Fight="fit" Feeling bad="feeling poorly" I love it! Does anyone have some more?

"Full as a tick"
Aww shoot, could write a book, as a matter of fact, I did start one once on the hill language and old farmer sayings...then major life interuptus...

Re: Hey Chazzy....did ya watch?
The food? Greens, green tomatoe pie, blackberry everything!
Gawd, when I was in the country, I made a kick ass batch of blackberry/wild grape jam every year, I'd kill for a jar full of that right now. Finding a paw paw tree and trying that fruit was kinda my holy hillbilly grail.

Re: Hey Chazzy....did ya watch?
Apparently, you use the term " Gay " in an insulting manner....allot...you must think it's shameful and/or insulting to be gay ...you do realize that gay /bi/lesbians frequent this site? I sure don't want people to get the idea that we are some vanillia, conservative "missionary only" boring closed minded bigoted type of site..cuz we sure are not!
Goody, did you and your family ever do anything with persimmons? I was gonna try persimmon butter once, but man, by the time you clean and pit them, not much fruit left and seemed like way more work than I need to do since I could just stick to peach, apple or pear butter.

Re: Hey Chazzy....did ya watch?
What about Weather predicting? Speaking of Persimmons...you split the seed/pit of a persimmon and it'll look like a knife, fork or spoon in the middle...forget what means what, but by what you found there was suppose to tell you wheter it would be a snowy, cold or mild winter...most people know about the wooley worm winter prediction, don't know how accuarte or scientific this kind of stuff is...but it's just a romantic and sweet part of hillbilly history.

Of course you're wanted!
But If you feel your stronger opinions and unPC humor should be acceptable and funny here, then so should my opinions and kind of humor!
And now why are you insulting fast food workers ??

Re: Hey Chazzy....did ya watch?
Yep, you can check the History Channel website for airing times. Usually if it runs once in the evening, it'll repeat very late that same night too.
I plan on giving it another watch, it's a fantastic docuemtary on our American History, the part about the history of Nascar is so cool.
I even more now, understand my own family's history, my mother's side did come from South Carolina, I think I understand why when they relocated to Missouri, they chose the southern hills.

Re: Hey Chazzy....did ya watch?
Speaking of good country cooking, how about some polk salad. I try to get my hands on a mess every spring. Love it, love it. Goes great with pinto beans and cornbread. YUM, YUM!!! Tonight I am having fried salmon patties, pinto beans, and fresh fried corn cut off the cob. It sure smells good in my kitchen right now.

I remember Polk, still see it growing around here. Remember you can't pick it after the berries are on it. Never cared to much for it, but my daughter loved the stalk in scrambled eggs. Reminds me of the song "Polk Salad Annie."

Not persimmons, but every other kind of fruit. I loved picking blackberries, my grandmother made the best cobbler. yum yum

Thanks Chazzy, I like talking to you too. I will have to write to the History Channel and make a suggestion about the music. Music was a very important part of the culture, I hate to see that overlooked. Have you seen the movie "Song Catcher?" Very good movie, about the history of mountain music.

You will love "Songcatcher" I was looking online and I think I am going to go ahead and buy it. One of the stars is Adian Quinn. It is set in 1907 in the mountains of Appalachia. A woman visits her sister who lives in a rural coal miming town and discovers the local musicians play traditional folk music they learned from their ancestors in Scotland and Ireland.

I am a born and raised New Yorker with no ties to the hills whatsoever, but I thought that show was fascinating. I definitely recommend seeing it more than once because theres so much information in there that its hard to take in all the facts by watching it only once.
