Luxury or Necessity?
Luxury or Necessity?
I think maybe allot of things started out as a luxury at one time, like microwave ovens, home computer and the Internet, air conditioning?
It's seems pretty necessary to have a microwave oven, I'm sure we all use up more leftovers because of them, and good gawd, how great are they when you need to thaw something out for dinner? The work/office microwave...that's workin' out pretty good,
Computer and Internet, that's gotta be a necessity to most of us, it's an electronic gadget world, it's an Internet world, it's a rapidly changing world...how else can we keep up with it? How else can we stay so connected to it and our friends and family?
Air conditioning? I could manage without it, but geez...but so many can't and their health depends on it....and someday our lives too. People die of heatstroke in their own homes every year.

Re: Luxury or Necessity?
Just imagine. No a/c and it's in the 100's or close. Microwaves have made taking real home made food to work and even in trucks. The home computer has made oportunities for millions to make money while staying home and taking care of thier children. [plus saving the gas and child care costs]
Imagine having to get up in the night to put more wood in the stove so ou don't freeze. Imagine having to use an "outhouse" instead of just walking to an indoor toilet in the middle of the night and having to go to an outside well to bring buckets of water in.
Yes, it's 3 am.

Re: Luxury or Necessity?
I've lived with a wood stove as the only heat, during the coldest part of the year, your whole life revolves around that stove, keeping it fed,

I know others that the wood stove is the only heat as well. It's far too much work for me.

Re: Luxury or Necessity?
I've been thinking of this the past few days about the cost of fuel. What is going to happen this winter with the cost of fuel rising, will it boil down to either feeding yourself/family, or buying fuel to keep warm? This is going to be a very rough winter for alot of folks the way the economy is. Since my parents basically live in one room, I suggested using an electric ceramic heater to keep the fuel cost down. Just this past spring, the average cost for them to fill their oil tank was over 700 dollars, and with the way they keep the thermostat on or close to 80, I just hope they take my suggestion into consideration.

Re: Luxury or Necessity?
That's about what we paid for a tank of fuel oil, and it's a fairly new high efficiency furnace. We'll barely have last years bill paid by the time we need a fill for the upcoming winter.

Re: Luxury or Necessity?
Fax machine, I don't really need one, rarely ever need to send a fax...I just use an online free fax service.
But FOR my parents it's a necessity...Mom has to keep all the medical billing straight for the her and Dad, keep track of what's covered in thier health plans...she use to have to go make copies and mail them and spend tons of time on the phone, now she can just send and recieve faxed statements, reciepts and correspondance and keep thing straight and caught up quickly, easily.
